I just booked for 2010, never been there before. Hotels are damn pricey, so I ended up booking in Keystone. I figure I can drive the 50 miles to Sturgis and have an easy ride of 50 miles back to Keystone at end of day. And, if I don't want to go to Sturgis, I'll be set to hit some really great backroads out my door. Anyone else have any experiences (good or bad) staying in Keystone during Sturgis week? Thanks!

My wife and I go and have a blast! We stay down in Rapid City so we don't hear rumbling all night. The rides on Iron Mountain Road, Needles Highway and taking 44 under the Badlands are fantastic. WARNING: if you do 44 from Rapid City across the bottom of the Badlands, make sure you have a 5 gallon tank and it is full. Going to Deadwood and having a beer on the roof deck watching the scoots go by is great. One of the best rides is doing Spearfish Canyon, seeing the Bridal Vail waterfall is really cool. If you want to wave to your friends and make them jealous, go t http://www.wwolf.net/webcam and click the link to see the live Sturgis Cams out there. This is one of my wife's websites she built and owns. We own a web development company and we had over 2 million hits during the 2009 Sturgis Rally.

You can't go wrong if you decide on Sturgis 2010.
If you have the time ride out, getting there is the adventure. If you are planning the trip with a group, bet on at least half backing out before the day you leave. If on the day you pick to leave all of your travelling freinds have backed out go anyways.
Once you get there I would recommend camping, you meet many more people in a campground. There are lots of campgrounds to choose from, depending on what you are looking for.
On my first trip out I camped right next to town that way I could walk in to hit the bars. The police are not tolerant of Drinking and riding.
Although there is lots to choose from I stay at Day's End, where you are close enough to walk to town the facilities are great and it is on the west side where all the riding is so that the only time you need to go through town is when you want to. To cruise Main and Lazelle or to see a show at the CHIP.
The best advise is to go there, you will not be disappointed.
The trip is beginning to take shape. Doing the trip solo. Taking four days to get there. Will spend four days before the rally camping in the Black Hills. I'm going to do four of the rides listed on the Mad Maps Sturgis Rally Guide. Then will spend four nights doing the rally and seeing the sights (Buffalo Chip, Main Street Deadwood). I heard the Chip's Fondue dinner is a must. I'm hoping to see some flat track and hill climb races. Thanks all for the great feedback.

Ok so I know it's early but I live in Jacksonville, Fl. and the logistics and approval process (wife/work that is) takes time. I get almost a whole year of getting to plan this trip and I'm going to enjoy every minute. Already got some reservations going and working on the routes. Jack Daniels distillery, H-D factory tour in Kansas City, Black Hills, Badlands and of course the 70th anniversary of the rally what else could you ask for!! Any must do's, don't misses or good eats you can think of would be welcomed.
From Seattle, I rode there with a buddy this year... first time for both of us. Great riding, great times. It definitely doesn't hurt to be planning a year ahead, expecially if you want decent rates on any kind of hotel in the area. If you're a camper, not so bad.
We went freestyle (no rez) to & from Sturgis/Seattle, but while there we hotel'd it in Rapid City, about 20mi away, for an average of about $100/night (but I booked about late Sept the year before). RC is still central to everything like all the local rides, the H-D official convention, and less than 30min from downtown Sturgis.
My tip is only that you consider your priorities on a scale of 1-10... low to high...
(1) = cost-conscious/quieter/less partying (but not none!)/less-crowded/more sleep, vs
(10) = cost don't matter/louder/24-7 party options/more crowded-less sleep.
If you're a "high number" guy, stay closer in to Sturgis and/or the big party campgrounds nearby. If you're a low-number guy, think about staying out in one of the other nearby towns or more remote campgrounds. You can visit the big party places without actually staying there, and also go to their shows at night.
Oh, and don't think that people camping in-town in local folk's yards are getting to do that for free. There is nothing free in Sturgis during Bike Week!
Cheers, and enjoy!

Just received our reservation conformations from the Broken Spoke Campgrounds. I went last year with 2 other guys I work with. 2010 I am taking my wife. For 99.00 a person, you can stay from Aug. 3rd. to Aug. 15th. That includes all of the bands they have playing. They also have a large pool and hot tubes. The have one of the largest saloons around. It is 45,000 sq ft. and has 7 or 8 bars in it. The pool has 2 bars.
Three of the bands that played this year was Foghat, 38 Special and Kentucky Headhunters.
Nice place to camp, quiet at night easy to get to from Sturgis on 79 about 7 miles from there. It is real close to Bear Butte. http://brokenspokecampground.com
