Has anybody rented a harley to see if they here athe same problem in that bike. I would love to get a new bike but I can't deal with these problems. Maybe the 08 models will be corrected, the heat problems tranny problems. I can't see spending 1500 dollars to make the bike run richer just so I can ride the bike during the summer. 90 degrees outside.
I test-rode an RK demo with 50 miles on the clock in August or September when the '07's first came out, and it had the compensator rattle at RPM's lower than about 2.2k. I mentioned it to a friend at the time who rode the same bike, but he didn't hear any clattering, probably a result of his riding style (higher shift points). When I bought my SG in November I thought maybe the problem had been solved by then, but the clatter was there, mostly squelched by using a thicker oil for the primary (Castrol GTX 20w50). At this point, I just keep RPM's above 2200 in 5th and 6th and the compensator rattle is largely a memory. BTW, the rattle is not the tranny, but originates with the compensator--and HD says it does not cause trouble or suggest any defect. I believe them and just ride it, but keep RPM's a bit higher than I did with my Evo in the higher gears. By now I've adjusted to it and am a happy camper.
The whine in 1st and 5th gears is there on my bike, but is so unobtrusive as to be a non-issue. In fact, had I not read about it on this forum I probably would not have noticed it at all, and now that I have it is not a concern. I heard no whine in the RK demo I rode either. The notion that the '07's have "tranny problems," as evidenced by the subject of this thread, is a misconception, IMO. I really don't think the tranny has any problems at all, and the whine is to be considered normal. Go for it! These '07's are sweet-running bikes, and I don't think you'll regret buying one. The 96 is smoother, torquier, and quieter than the 88's they replaced.

Agreed the tranny isnt the clatter maker only the resipiate,the comp also seems acting up due to real cause coming from else where.This is what the 903 SB was driven to cure.And in some bikes it has.Im sure HD will take a stab at those remaining.
Pittguy-- You're mellowing. It scares me a little but I do understand. There's only so much emotional energy you can throw at this before you take a deep breath and step back a little. There's a bigbunch of us thatstill have a genuine tranny problem and will continue to hold HD's feet to the fire (and screwyou guys that haven't heard my bike and say I'm a whiner that lugs his bike). Haven't been able to do low RPM remap (too much snow) but sounds like that's part of the solution.
There are lots of bikes sitting idle in garages right now. Lots of 07s on the showroom floors, soon to have owners. I have no doubt this thing will pick up momentum again as the weather warms. I'm sure Harley knows that too.
I usually hang out at Harley Zone but have not found any info on my problems. I have just read through all 46 pages of this post and I am dizzy.
I traded in my 05' Deluxe for a 07' Road King. I got a fantastic deal from a great dealer (Ocean County Harley in NJ). Too cold the end of Dec. to ride it home, I put it on the trailer. A few days later it was nice out, so I went for a ride with a friend. Finally shifted into fifth, when I heard it. Sounded like a pillowcase full of silverware. Even my friend heard it a few car lenghts back.
One thing I noticed. If I keep 4th all the up to 50, at least, then hit 5th, I have no problem. No chattering, smooth as silk. Below 50, forget it. So I get home a whip out the owner's manual for some "hidden message". Nothing. Shift into 5th at about 45mph it says. No way!!
Dropped the bike off at the dealer today. Of course no one knows anything about this. Now after reading this forum I feel better?? Worse?? I don't know. I will be reading and posting in the future.
I love this bike, and get compliments all the time. Maybe I just have to change my riding habits with the 07'. I dunno.

Harley does know about this, but perhaps they're not letting it filter down to the dealers, as mine hadn't heard anything either back in November. When I approached the dealer's owner about a month ago he said he knew nothing either but would find out what he could, and I've talked to HD tech support (drivetrain section, not the first-level guys), and the guy I talked to twice admitted the problem and said it should not be a concern. It supposedly originates in the newly engineered compensator and it travels down the short (by comparison to Dynas and Softails) primary chain and often sounds like it comes from the tranny. It's a harmonic, supposedly.
My dealer's owner swears he will know more this week when he attends a conference of some sort, so if I hear anything I'll pass it along.

Classicking, I'd find out if theDealership installedthe 0903 torque soothing download for the HD recall. It helped mine at lower RPM's. It took about $2,500 to fix the rest of my problems. I now have 84HP & 102Tq and I am much happer with the bike. I just hope the noises stay away when it gets above 50 degrees.
Classicking -- First off, that's a beautiful bike. Of course, I'm biased, I have the same bike in same color combo. A little more chrome and other goodies but...I've had a little more time with mine.
Based on comments on this and other forums, it's amazing how consistent these problems are - if you get one with problems. I predict that your "no clattering above 50" will change to "no clattering above 55-60" once you get a nice warm day and a good, hot bike (>50 miles). Hope that doesn't scare you too much. I love my RK Classic and wouldn't trade it but there is a problem that needs to be addressed. I suspect Harley's telling the truth, i.e. it's a harmonic thing and not a functional issue. It's still not right and they have to recognize that.
Sorry your dealer isn't more in the loop. It's hard to believe he hasn't heard from more folks like yourself but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt (silly me). My own dealer says he has "several" with this problem and he is also hoping for the moco to come clean and do what's right. Somehow it helps, that he doesn't sing a song about straight-cut gears and low RPMs. Now if they'll just fix my damn bike.
Do let us know if you get any update. There are lots watching and waiting. Like I said, this will pick up lots of steam when the weather warms. It's easy to be patient with the bike under wraps in the garage.

Wow!! I don't want to spend any money fixing a brand new bike. Only on maybe making look better than it already does. I definitely will keep everyone posted and will keep checking back.
Damn I never thought I would get to the end of this post. I noticed the nosie also in 1st and 5th but no nosie in 6th. I was told the nosie was from the way they cut the gears. I believe that is the problem. I kind of like it. I went from a5 to a6 and for the longest I forgot I had a 6-speed
