Exclamation Is it the transmission?

2006 Harley Ultra Classic

Shifts into N-2-3-4-5, downshifts 5-4-3-2-N

Won't shift into first. When in N the toe shift pedal is practically sitting on the floorboard.

Have removed primary chaincase housing, clutch, and shift cam. All parts look in good condition and clean.

Any thoughts?

Raise the toe shifter (remove and raise on the splines)....

If it moves, the bolt could be bad (Not enough torque), or the splines are bad....

Ok, the teeth on the shaft and the splines on the linkage...are questionable. Without having a new one to gauge...if I have to replace the linkage and shaft (going into the transmission), how do I remove the shaft?

ETA...the splines on the toe shift look good...which is why I say the aft splines are questionable.

The shift arm is replaced by removing the primary and the shaft is installed/removed thru the tranny.

Is the capscrew tight on the shift arm?

Easy to verfify stripped splines.......with the shift arm capscrew removed does the arm slip over the spines when tuned?

The splines are definitely flattened out in some areas and leads me to believe that when everything is tightened and there is a load on the clutch that it would be slipping. How do I remove the shift arm shaft from the transmission to replace it? Do I have to remove the whole transmission? Gears? I already have the top cover of transmission removed.

Have replaced aft shift arm piece. New bolt in starter jackshaft (GRRRR), everything seems to be going well. However, when I took a look in the transmission I had removed the shift cam. I don't think I got it back in correctly. Is there a trick to getting it properly lined up?

you have to adjust the shift arm with the 5/16" shaft on the side of the transmission. You loosen the nut to free the shaft. You adjust the shift linkage with the trans is 3rd gear. Adjust until you have EXACTLY the same amount of free play up and down. I don't do it by feel as described in the manual. I do it by visually looking at the shift pawl. Oh yea, if you don't have a Service Manual you should get one.

Before installing the drum rotate the shift drum until the detent is in the neutral position. Line up the pillow blocks(with the drum between them) over their locating dowels. As you lower the drum in place slide the forks so they fit into the drum cam slots. Tighten the pillow block screws and then use the trans lever to shift through the gears.

Ok, I'm going to be the stupid female here. Can you explain to me the detent? I do have a manual and it isn't real clear on the reinstallation of the shift cam. What happens right now is that I can shift once up and once down. So it is not in correctly to allow me to shift through all the gears.
Another dumb question...I am going to have to remove the trans top cover again, do I have to replace that gasket even though I haven't run the bike since replacing it? Can I reuse that gasket this once?
