Ya if the bike isn't making the noise, and it's warmed up and has already made the noise, all I have to do to get it to make the noise again is pull the clutch in and release slowly and there I have it.
It's fucing weird! The noise is definitely coming from the left rear.
Was your buddies bike ever fixed?
What noise is your bike making?
Buddy isn't fixing his problem unless it dies before he trades it in this winter. My main noises were from the shifter and valvetrain. The shifter insert(rubber part in the toe kicks) vibrates and has a high pitch rattle. Drive's me f'n nuts.

When the bike is hot or at least 200 deg. that is oil temp right? clutch, primary chain or drive belt. It only take a bit to remove the primary cover and loook for rubmarks but look at the drive belt for polished spots first cause they do get tighter with heat. by the way you have a great logo.
Can you get get the bike ot make the noise while not riding? The 'puffing' sound leads me to a single cylinder, head, exhaust, or intake.
To check a head gasket, warm the bike up and perform a leakdown test. (As I am unsure of your mechanic experience, make sure, if you do a leak down test you do it twice.) If it holds, probably not the head gasket or bad valve. If it does not hold, then I would pop off that head and try and figure out why.
When you had the head pipe off, did you notice any imperfections or distortions in the head pipe head-end? Even small distortions (or old gasket crud left) can cause the gasket to fail quickly.
The throttle body (intake track) has seals between the throttle body and the heads. While I don't think you would be able to hear it no matter how much it leaked, but its worth checking.
