Interesting that H-D are the overwhelming choice. Why? Can't be cost. What else, availability?
They come in chrome.
There is a AC Delco filter that almost the same as harley (same pressure valve and filter microns, etc.) but who wants a blue filter with writing on the front of their bike?
Two things:
1. A fool and his money are soon parted!
2. I've got a blue AC Delco filter. I don't give a rat's patootie that it is blue, has a label with writing, and is on the front of my bike! I use it 'cause it's a good one and I can usually get 'em for less than $3.00. I also run black Wix and Napa (made by Wix) filters, too.
Skip,
I was wondering if you were going chime in.

Probably because if you use HD oil you just get everything at a dealership and slap your wallet just once. A buddy and I split a case of AC filters a number of years ago, couldn't tell the difference other than they only came in black. Ya know, if you change your oil every 2K or 2.5K, it doesn't get real dirty. Unless you're doing Electra Glide Moto Cross.

What a great forum, very informative.
I'd like to buy a different brand of oil filter, other than Harley. I have an S&S 113" that takes a short Evo Softail filter (Same as sportster). Is there a reference on this thread or is someone familiar with this filter? Wix/Fram/other brand doesn't matter. Thanks in advance

Howdy,

Back in my youth,( a long time ago), when I was a budding Hot Rodder and building a nice 57 Chevy, I was told by all supposedly in the know, both personal contacts and magazine articles, Not to use a chrome oil filter except for a show as the chrome retains much more heat. A painted filter will dissipate heat from the oil much better.
Any thoughts?

PS, 57 Chevy 2 Door 150 Business Coupe
327 Chevy motor,
AFB carb
Muncie 4 speed trany
456 Posi rear end

Car is long gone, the memories are not.

Why not use the filter that was specked and built for the motor instead of something that fits and may work just because you can buy it for 3$ less?
