I like the K&N filters. They are usually cheaper than the HD filters, plus they have a hex wrenching lug on the end for easy removal, and a hole to safety wire it. The K&N Performance Gold also filters particles down to 10 microns in size. I've taken the HD filters apart and I'm not very impressed with their design. That was about 4 years ago, so I'm not sure what brand they are using now.
I kind of know... Dealer scare tactics must work very well for them...
Yes, some dealerships will tell you anything to get you to spend money in their shop rather than somewhere else. I prefer to support the little guy (independent shops).
A lot of filters cross reference to Harley. These also happen to be automotive filters and are not designed for a motorcycle. The Harley engine is designed for oil volume and not pressure, so an auto filter can be restrictive. just be sure the filter you get was designed for the application that you are going to use it on.

Interesting that H-D are the overwhelming choice. Why? Can't be cost. What else, availability?
I think it is because not enough is known about other manufacturers filter design. I would like to try another, better, filter but I'm not sure about the by-pass pressure and filter media. Tim

They come in chrome.
There is a AC Delco filter that almost the same as harley (same pressure valve and filter microns, etc.) but who wants a blue filter with writing on the front of their bike?

Two things:
1. A fool and his money are soon parted!
2. I've got a blue AC Delco filter. I don't give a rat's patootie that it is blue, has a label with writing, and is on the front of my bike! I use it 'cause it's a good one and I can usually get 'em for less than $3.00. I also run black Wix and Napa (made by Wix) filters, too.
