Personally I feel the government has no say in this matter in a public place. What we forget about public is you have a right to be there and a right to not.
I am a none smoker and yea, it bothers me, but its my right to NOT go there if its that bad. Both sides have just as much right in a public place.
If I went to a public place and didn't like the food, I can choose whether or not I want to return...no different

One of my tenants is a neighborhood bar. Their business has dropped 40% since the smoking ban took affect last July. They may not be able to remain in business due to it. That means 6 people out of work, one business with the associated tax revenue gone, and my building is again vacant, ie. less tax revenue again plus less income for me.
Whether or not a business allows smoking or not is a matter of private property rights. The business owner has the right to decide who does what inside his business. Granted, there are times whennon-smokers should have a separate place. This can be managed with separately ventilated areas in larger establishments. Smaller establishments would not be subject to this restriction. Basically back to the way it was. Equal Freedoms for all.
If you want to ban smoking all together, grow a pair and make tobacco totally illegal.
Bottom line is one ban leads to another, pretty soon you won't be able to blow your nose in public. Riding bikes is dangerous would you be so quick to say why is it still legal to ride them. Think about it, once items are banned they will not be legal again. JMO

When the government decides to ban something you do care about, it will be too late. You will lose because you allowed everything everyone else cared about to be banned. Then no one will care about anything.

It is like that here in CA, and has been for a while.Â* I am used to it.Â* I quit about a year and a half ago.Â* Had nothing to do with that, but now that I don't smoke, I appreciate it...The city I live in has also made it illegal to smoke on the beach, and on the promenade which is a public outside mall.Â* If I still smoke I would be livid, but since I don't I could care less...

Exactly! I'm a non-smoker myself, never smoked, never plan on it. I personally hate when people smoke in restaurants. I voted against all the smoking bans here in AZ last fall.
But, I don't think any facet of the government should ban smoking in any form. Once you give them an inch, they'll take a mile! Plus, it should be the businesses right to decide if they want to have a smoking establishment or not. If you don't like it, don't eat/drink there!

Passed the law here in Colo. a couple years ago...no smokes in bars, restaurants, any indoor public area basically. Sucked in the beginning (I lit up a few times by mistake)but you get used to it...my "home" bar has a outdoor patio (music and TV equipped) for smoking so it's no big deal andas forthe bar/restaurant employees/patronswhodon't smoke it's a good thing. Ismoke (1/2 pack a day) but not inmy house (I go to the garage)and I've always got the window down when I smoke in the car.

Hey that's cool, but what about when they decide it's not good for you to smoke in the garage or in your car even with the windows down.
I like to live by this quote:
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety
Enclosed public places - yes
They stink and I hate em.
I use to smoke but I don't now. No I don't agree with banning what you can do in public, Byran is right, why should you be allowed to wear your perfume, make offense farts that kills my sinus's but I can't smoke because it bothers you. Maybe I don't like the way you look, your body odor is offensive, your wife is ugly,I think you get my drift.
Hey John,
All good points but a stinky perfume won't give you cancer. Neither will an ugly wife!!
I said "enclosed public places"
If a bar could be designated as a "smoking" establishment then what the hell. If you don't smoke, don't go in. Maybe let the bar decide.
We wouldn't take our kids into one - would we?

Just more inroads for the gov't to run your life. Those for the ban have no cogent argument against helmet laws, seat belt laws, drinking bans, or even food laws. Once you play the 'safety' card you lose your right for it not to be used against you.
