Perhaps we need a change in methodology here. Let's say to be declared "fit to serve" you only have to be 18 yrs old, standing mostly upright, and breathing. The youth of today could be made fit both mentally and physically while training in the Army. Might straighten a good many of them out.

Default Which generation is to blame ???

which generation to blame? Is it the generation that is fat an un-fit for the military, or the generation that didn't protect the good and fun life they had as kids. That allowed the newer generation to become so useless. If there are parents in here is it your kids fault for being fat or you, for not teaching them how to have a healthy lifestyle. younger generations only become what they are taught.

Sorry

It is sad. It should be a wake-up call for parents. My daughter is 4 and I refuse to let her sit in front of the TV all day. Weekends, she'll get to watch a couple of hours of TV but after that, the TV goes off and she is made to go outside and play. You didn't complain of being bored in my parents' home. If you made the mistake of even breathing that word, Mom put you to work. I think kids are too plugged-in today. That and schools have pretty much eliminated PE. Latch-key kids are told to go home and stay inside until their parents arrive and do their homework. We used to come home, find mom, get a snack, then hit the door and not come back inside until dark but then this was before computers, computer games, IPODs and Iphones. We drank milk with breakfast and lunch; we weren't fat and and we didn't have a Vitamin D deficiency.

OMG! I sound just like my mother.........aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!

My kid is in the Army, heading to Iraq in early December for his second tour. Poor kid has missed 3 Christmas holidays with his extended family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc). The only blessing is he's not headed to Afghanistan.
My son in law "celebrated" his 26th birthday last week in Iraq.

It all comes down to motivation and what you want to do with your life.

This will be his first Christmas away.

Blessings to both our boys

Good luck to your son in law. Here's hoping he arrives back safely.

Well most of us weren't. I did have to wear "husky" jeans when I was a kid.

Seriously though; fat, unfit kids can't get into the military due to the height/weight standards the Department of Defense has in place. There was no such thing when I enlisted in '76, and believe me, I saw a whole bunch of weight shed during basic training. One guy I remember lost so much weight, he had to have new uniforms issued.

Double yep!

When I was a kid, not all THAT long ago (30 end of this year) we went home form school, dropped off our back packs, said hi to mom, went outside to play. When mom started working, we went home from school, dropped off our backpacks and went outside to play. We had yards, friends yards, driveways with basketball hoops.

We were inside for dinner, which was always a home cooked meal. Even with both parents working. Except Friday. Friday was pizza night and always had been (still is). Weekends we were outside. When we finally got video games (parents couldn't afford them until later) we were only allowed to play during the time we would normally watch TV. Summer vacation ... get outside and play.

We built forts, go karts, bicycle ramps, etc. Now kids build a character in a video game and live through said character.

I remember my mother turning off the nintendo one morning because it was time for me to go outside and play. I was mad. I didn't throw a fit because that would lead to me being in the house with no toys or anything. And an angry dad that night who would slap my behind for popping off. I never once threatened to call child protective services.

Kids are too empowered today. Parents try to be friends more than parents.
