I was out doing some running around one night. I observed a couple in a car making rounds to different gas stations. The only thing I saw them doing was begging for money. I myself just happen to be going to the different gas stations looking for cigarettes that they don't seem to sell anymore. I guess people make a living begging for gas money these days. Myself like the poster above don't give money to anyone. My kids have a greater need for it.

Had a black guy approach me in a grocery store parking lot once. He first asked me if I was prejudiced. I said no. Then he starts asking me if he could have a few bucks to get some gas as he was on empty. I asked him why was he trying to get gas in a grocery store parking lot and why didn't you stop at a gas station (there are several next to the grocery store).
Left him standing there. I overheard a woman in his car hollering out to him, "did you get any money?" I figure they were looking to get money for booze. They looked pretty shady, anyway. I've been approached by people who are REALLY in need of some help. Sometimes it isn't too hard to tell the difference.

They do around here. News media did a special report on it several years ago. They'd be on a street corner either all day, or until they figured they'd do better somewhere else, then they'd walk a couple blocks away and get into very nice, expensive cars. A few they cornered and talked to admitted that they don't work, but beg for a living. And they do damn good at it. Better than I do actually working.

They're starting to show up around here too. Standing on a busy corner holding a sign with some kind of plea to help feed their hungry children or some other nonsense. Saw a couple of women driving up and down the parking lanes at Wal-Mart stopping people and asking for gas money to go to another town to pick up the woman's son. Pulled up beside me and my son and asked if they could ask a favor. I said no and continued on.
I like to question the panhandlers until they realize I know they're lying to me. I'll buy food, soda, and cigarettes for homeless people, if I've seen them around before.
I never give money to liars.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
Best answer,,, I learned that tactic a long time ago,,, I was 19,, had an older feller at a gas station in Chattanooga walk up to me and said he was homeless and hungry could I spare some change so he could get a hamburger,,, feeling sorry for him I gave the dude a couple of bucks he thanked me and said he was going to get something to eat, and he disappeared,,,, when I got back in my truck and started leaving guess what,,,,,, I saw the guy with some of his buds turning up his quart of beer out back of this place,,,, now I do as KR does,,, hungry I'll get you something, but no money,,, need gas I'll help you, but no money.

So, I was filling the gas tank the other night about to go for short ride. An older gentleman made a quick comment just being sociable. Just as I had began to stick the nozzle in my tank, a young lady came out of the store asking if I could do her a 'favor'. Yes, I did take a few seconds knowing it could be a 'pan handler'. She said that she was desperate for a few bucks to buy a quart of oil so she could make it back home. I'm a person who usually does a quick assessment of how people act in certain situations. I knew the girl was talking way too much for my comfort, and that usually spells 'liar' to me.
Anyway, I gave in thinking that I could afford giving up a few bucks, so I ended up donating 4 bucks to her 'cause'. She thanked me then promptly jumped into her vehicle and drove off down the road. I finished refueling, then since I was just out for a joy ride I went in the same direction she left. Turns out just a cpl blocks up the road she got caught at a railroad crossing. I was at the end of a line of 12-14 vehicles, and saw what I thought was her mini-van near the front. I passed the group on the right shoulder and waited for the crossing to open up.
I sped down the road a few blocks then pulled off to the right at an intersection to watch as she passed by. Then I got back in behind her and followed to the next traffic signal, where we both caught the red light. I was directly behind her at this point, and rolled up beside her drivers window which was open. I told her to give the 4 bucks back, she began screaming that she NEEDED OIL. More lies. To shorten the story, I followed her several blocks around and around. She had a young guy with her that grew tired of the whole mess and jumped out at one of the stop signs then walked off. She screamed out the window "I HOPE YOU ARE HAPPY NOW! You scared the hell out of my friend and he took all of my ten bucks!" I guess she thought I was supposed to feel guilty from that, but guess what...
Anyway I followed her through several streets more in the middle of the crack district, with dealers hollerin at me at each corner. Another tactic to scare me off I reckon. I don't scare easily, especially since I grew up in those type of neighborhoods. She finally pulled down an alley between buildings and was greeted by yet another dealer lookin type. I sat at the end of the drive for a few seconds, then decided that I would be better off catching her on the road another day. Four bucks ain't worth having some moron lookin to boost his 'hood rep. I'll think even harder the next time I feel sorry for a 'lady' in distress. I hope when I run across one that is in actual need I still have the decency to assist. <--Invitation for another scam?
Just say "no" next time. Show any signs of waivering and they'll work you until you give in...
My Mother had a similar thing happen to her last week, some young lady showed up at her front door asking for money because she was getting kicked out of her house with her baby, blah blah, anyway my Mom tells her she would be more than happy to help but insisted that she pay the hotel in person for her, I guess the girl knew her scam was caught on to and she moved on down the street to the next house. Hard times for people has the price of Rock gone up with the drop in I.Q.
