I don't buy that "big city = long response" theory...say what you want about NYC, but I know a few folks, myself included, who needed 911 and no onewaited more than a few minutes for a unit at the door.

I certainly do not want to argue, but I know of folks too who have called 911 in NYC and he response was horrible. Any number of reasons why your experience and my friend's experience was different, but generally my statement stands. It is just a simple matter of numbers - citizens, police, firefighters, dispatchers etc. oh and calls to 911.
The biggest problem is BS Calls. Or people who call 911 instead of getting a phone book or calling 411. Some don't know, some are lazy, and some don't speak english so 911 is all they know, and they will get someone that hablas espanolas. Another rant, since we are on this line of venting is welfare recipients that call 911 to get an ambulance to get their prescription refilled. They call and say they are having chest pain or something. An ambulance is dispatched and get on scene to find someone exaggerating their problem so the ambulance will take them to the hospital. Why? you ask, because if they go to the pharmacy they have to pay for their prescription, if they come in by ambulance the hospital can't refuse medical treatment. So me and you foot the bill for their transport, care and prescription. All of which was faked to get more drugs. Sorry, I am at work today and it has been b$llsh$t calls galore.
My Neighbors boyfriend parked his truck in front of my driveway, completely blocking it, a few weeks ago. I called them, no answer - I knocked on their door, same non-response. I called the local precinct to see what my options were to get it towed or just moved (It wasn't the first time he'd done it), and was told that I would have to call 911. I explained it wasn't an emergency, I just wanted to know my options, but they said they couldn't help me and I HAD to call 911. So I did: two squad cars pull up in about 10 minutes and proceed to write about 6 tickets and tell me I can have it towed if I want - then they leave with the thing still blocking my driveway...
Needles to say I ain't on their Christmas list this year - but he does park well away from my property now.
Oh well, that is one of the benefits of living in a big city... A lot of people are trying to find the real America by moving to small towns... Just one word of advice to those that lean toward doing this, adapt to the small town, don't try to make the town adapt to you...

EXACTLY !!!!
I quit as a volunteer EMT for this very exact reason..... I didn't mind actual emergencies, helping people out.. but B/S calls crapped me out, and many many others.. now the local ems is in serious trouble, no more volunteers, going to paid department..Let's see if this works out... I doubt it

My wife works on the flip-side of the bs calls. She works in the billing department for an ems. You would not believe how many old folks can't understand why medicare denied their claim for transport when the call was for constipation (or something equally as minor). On one hand, it's kind of sad (they usually have no family), but on the other, why don't they just call a cab and see the doctor instead of calling an ambulance for transport to the er???
