With most companies, a totaled vehicle is anything with damages totaling something like 75% or more of the vehicles value.
This is pretty much the way it works, and at least here in NC, 75% is the total loss guideline. However, it is not up to the insurance company. Total loss thresholds and procedures are set by state law and vary slightly from state to state. In some states, vehicles may be deemed damaged but repairable at a lower threshold or not a TL unless a higher percentage of damage is found. Every insurance company who sells insurance in a particular state must abide by that state's rules. If an adjuster writes an estimate to repair that exceeds that total loss threshold, then he must obtain/determine a market value and handle accordingly.
On motorcycle claims, damage to the frame is the kiss of death, due in large part to the labor involved in replacing it. Notice that bike dealers aren't body shops and if a piece has any damage, they write to replace it. No shop wants to accept liability for major frame repairs and the equipment to straighten or even to verify that there is no frame damage is largely non-existant. Your bike is probably going to be repairable, and that is not usually a bad thing. Good luck!
arizona is not a state drivin total threshold... most insurance companies look at 80% , a couple do 75%.... and sometimes its even 85% if its a rarer vehicle
bad thing is, they total it and they are going to give wholesale... at least thats their objective, you can fight that, but most times i see people not winning that, not significantly anyways
If you dont want a totaled bike ie salvage title, your shop should be working with your insurance adjuster to see where the threshold is.
one option: total the bike, get the check go buy a new bike if you dont have GAP insurance this might not be a good option.
2nd option: tell your shop to work with adjuster to get the max amount right before it is totaled. depending on what you want done to fix, upgrade the bike you may have to kick some $$. but you have a clean title and you later down the line add upgrades to your insurance but i would wait a few months as insurance only covers stock items or what was originally on the bike.
3rd option: Bike gets totaled, you get check from insurance, you buy totaled bike from insurance company you rebuild bike. bad idea imho

I have Progressive but thankfully I have not had to use them! On another note, I was able to buy an adder for after market accessories by dollar amount. By doing this, I'm hoping I won't have to worry as much if they do total it as I should have enough $$ to replace it?? I be interested how things go!
Insurance company tried to total my old bike becasue it passed the threshold of 70%. I got with them and told them if they were going to total they needed to add back in all of the accessory items and pay me for that also. This brought the bike back below the threshold and they wrote me a check for all of the damage. I then turned around sold the bike as is and came out way ahead with insurance money and sale money and bought my first HD.....and lovin it.

When I was wrenching for an indy, the only thing that made a bike a definate total was a bent frame. If the frame was straight, we worked with the owner depending on what they wanted to do with what was left. It usually takes a pretty hard hit to tweak a frame (lucky to be alive type stuff), from my experience. I've seen lots of bikes that people have died on be fixed and resold because the frame was not tweaked.
Typically, in most wrecks that I've seen, there is almost always enough damage to total a bike if that is what is wanted by the owner.
Find a good shop that will work with you, and you should be able to settle things the way you want.
FWIW, most of the guys I know that have gone down hard enough to total their bikes regretted not buying them back if they declined when given the opportunity.
I went down hard on 8/23/09. My 08 UC's frame is bent, and there is additional cosmetic damage. So far to include the bent frame damages are at $12,000. They are not going to total it and shall replace the bent frame. Does anyone know if I will get a salvaged bike title when after the bike is all paid for?

If it did not flag for a total loss and is repairable, it will not have a salvage title. However, some states have a "damaged -repaired" label if it was severe enough. You'd be advised if that was the case, so sounds like it's all good.
