This bike parts hunt is quickly getting out of hand, i got hand controls only to discover they don't have switches or wiring, I'm not sure how to get turn signals that auto cancel, not sure if i can use a harness from a new bike with newer controls. its fun, but time consuming, i imagine it will get better when i have my parts catalog. Also, im discovering things don't mount the same on a 74 as they do on a 2006. Where the F does the horn go?????
I've stuck right now because I have a broken arm so i don't have the strength to get the engine off the frame and either finish it and paint it or send it off to be powder coated.
i think this wheel building thing is manageable. Also, anyone have an exploded diagram of the back rear drum ? i think im missing a piece, specifically the cable that came with my forward controls has nothing to hook up to.

Here is an exploded view of the rear brake parts. The drum is not shown of course, but all the brake parts are. Item #14 is the brake lever shaft that goes through the frame.

Ok this is a new wrinkle, I didn't realize the back brake operated with linkage vice a wire.
I assume that means the brake is engaged by forward motion of the rod, which in turn operates the lever, so assuming there was tension on the wire it could be wire operated.
Gents this might take a few hours to figure out. Thanks for the diagram PG, i shall return.

about your hand controls--i went through the whole blinker thing not long ago.not sure if your using factory controls or aftermarket.i had some aftermarket...and i have seen plenty others that does not come with blinkers.i used 2001 control housing from a superglide and technicaly switches from a 2000 and somthing sportster.i am 99% sure all the switches are the same at that point.the switches came with wiring already attached so all i had to do was wire it in to my wire harness that i had previously done.i was told on here to use 16 guage wire....i did not.i used 14 guage because of all the broken 16 guage wires i have see before and though i wanted somthing unbreakable.i regret that as i should have gone with the 16 guage.they used 16..maybe smaller even on lights for the new controls.14 guage was just a pain in the azz and unecasary.live and learn.just an fyi.
there was some "rigging" that needed to be done to the switches but it wasnt that bad.i meant to write everything down but did not.i probably could remember most everything if you need it.with new switches off of a new bike it is not going to "self cancel" like on a new bike nor can you leave it on and turn it off manually like older stuff or metrics.you have to keep your thumb on the switch in order for it to work.---people say you get use to it.i am slowly.--------you might be able to find somthing different or maybe you could wire in the computer/computer parts that is needed to make the switches work "correctly"....for me this is working out.

yes, now would be the time, but remember, your chain is going to be right there alongside your tire. I put a 150/70/18 on mine and it's gettin close. you may have to put a spacer between your drum and hub, and cut the spacer down on the left side to get a 180 in there. Then the tire wouldn't be in the center of the bike. I don't know if I'd want to start messing with all that geometry. The only other way I can think of would be to see if anyone makes or sells an offset sprocket for up front and a drum with an offset sprocket. Also, don't forget about your rear fender.(That is, if you were talking about the rear tire. Right?)
Well, theres a large spacer there now, my tire is offset currently. Really wish I had a digital camera but based on what i can tell it was designed for the large tire. I'll see if i cant get someone with a good cellphone camera to take some pics.

That would be great. I'm sure that you will be able to get some first hand experience from the guys on here. They probably have already seen and done it. This forum has helped me a TON!
