piniongear: needle jet has nothing to do with the choke aka enrichner system which is totally a differant animal. the bleed type jet has aireation holes in it where the fuel and air is mixed in the jet body. the primary jet type the air is mixed with the fuel after it leaves the jet body before it enters the venturi ports. you are correct in that the mid-range is controled by the needle and needle jet but incorrect as to where the fuel originates from. the fuel passes through the main jet first and is controlled by the annulus of the needle and needle jet until you approach wot, this is where the main jet kicks in and controls fuel flow. the parts for the old mikuni's are still around and quite accessable. i just did a major over-haul on a vm38 that had 150k on the clock. you do need to know which jets are in the carb as there are three styles of main jets also. pats small engine plus is a good source for mikuni parts as well as a google search. i like the vm because you can not run with the enrichner on as it is out of circuit when the throttle is opened and no accererator pump. they are eazy to tune and work on. my ch will run 133mph on the one it has on it on it is 34 yrs. old. however, the newer cabs do offer some advantages.

so what's up with the overly complicated explanations about things that are already figured out and solved anyways? this is not the first one I have seen.
