I used to split lanes in Germany on the back highway roads. One time I had a passenger on the back and I kept hearing, thunk, thunk, thunk until the back of my helmet got hit with a slap of the hand. I didn't realize that the passenger's knees was hitting the side view mirrors of the cars I was passing.
Heard that HD actually lobbied to keep it legal in CA to keep the air-cooled engines from overheating in all the traffic and high temps...Anyone know if this is true?
I used to lane split while living on Okinawa. It was legal and expected. Lots of military drivers didn't "get it" and complained all the time. Of course, the speed limit was 50kph on most of the island but traffic was a mess...saved lots of time by going to the front at lights.
I don't think I'd split while running at speed or with any moving traffic. Blind spots are ugly and it's not illegal for cars to change lanes!
I wish all of you people that don't split, have never split, are to scared to split, etc, etc, ect, would stop calling the ones that do stupid. if you are not in thier shoes then what do you know? I have lived in Cali and still travel there quite often. Most drivers do know that it's legal for cycle to split and move over for them. If I'm in Cali on my scoot I'll split when needed. Riding in a 10+ mile backup with stop and go traffic is stupid and dangerous. If you can't read my sig, I do it on an Ultra and I do 2-up. As long as you pay attention and do it safely, it's no big deal.

And my pants would be wet.... I'd rather be on the back roads...!
Problem with backroads here in So Cal is that you end up in little towns like Watts, Compton etc...,
I'll take my chances on the freeway splitting lanes. It takes some getting used to, especially on a touring bike, but it saves us time and allows the engine to stay cooler.
