Live in NY 50miles north NYC . So it does not get as hot as you guys in the South or TX and AZ. My Tri is parked in my garage under my house does not get hotter the 75. Haden't ridden for a few days The TG was parked with the handle bars to the left. Went for a short ride today got gas came home. Started to wipe the bike down. Saw what looked like oil on the crash bar upper left and a little on the clutch cable. I rub it in my fingers its oil. I think from were. The Damper when the handle bars are all the way to the left. The stearing damper piston is right over the Hwy bars or crash bars what ever you want to call them. So you don't have to live in a real hot area of the US to have the damper leak. Guess I gotta go to the dealer. Hope I can get the new and improved Damper.

Carlo, the problem is: (or at least was a month ago when I had my damper replaced) because the part number on the 2009 & 2010 retro-fit damper are the same; there is no way of knowing if they replaced it with a 2010 damper with a improved temperature range or another 2009 model!
Both parts appear identical and there is no external marking to differentiate the two. I would hope that MOCO recognized the errors of their way and assigned a new part number!
Carlo, I would recommend that you do everything possible to make sure the dealer receives and installs the 2010 retro. This silly little part has a retail list price of over five hundred bucks and should they install another 2009 model and it fails after your warranty has run out, you will be out over five hundred bucks!

How many miles on triglide when this dampener leak occured?
My steering damper started to leak around 3,000 miles; however, I believe that the leak problem is more a factor of exposure to the elements than it is use.
No one was very surprised when I reported my damper leaking because I operate in 100++ degree temperatures; however, the fact that Carlo reported that his damper leaked in a relatively mild climate of NY (70’s-80’s) leads be to believe that the problem is more severe than first believed. It would not surprise me to learn that brand new 2009 dampers sitting on warehouse shelves are leaking!

Jim I never rode or had my TG out side. All temps were 80 and below. I think the seals that are in the Damper are not holding up. They say a more viscous thicker oil is in the updated 2010 Damper but I think its the seals. Im going hold off till November then bring it to Reggie Pinks for the Damper. As i'll get the next 30 plus days of riding season in for NY. Also want to see how it handles and if any more oil leaks out. How did your TG handle with the old Damper with no oil in it. How is the new Damper. On many a parts box I see a date with the part number . Were you able to see the parts box on the new damper? The damper being $400 bucks looks like my storm door Piston that costs $20 bucks and no oil leak LOL

Carlos, the closest Harley dealer is 60 miles from me and the only way of getting there is via 20 miles of 65mph two lane and 40 miles of Interstate. I debated hooking up the trailer and trailing the bike to the dealer but that just seemed like to much work so I decided to ride the bike there. In retrospection, I should have trailed it; the last 30 miles or so got extremely interesting; every time I would hit a bump or a semi would pass, the handle bars wanted to rip out of my hands!
Apparently the last bit of lubricant had leaked out making the damper totally inoperative and the entire right side of my gas tank was covered with this fluid.
I’ll answer your question as to how the TG handled without any fluid in the damper this way:
“you know what dream it is to ride the TG when everything is working as designed
…well the exact opposite is true when operating at high speed with no damper…it’s a nightmare”! Of course it can be done but be careful because it’s not the same docile, (no high speed bad habits) TG that you are accustom to without the damper! So far the new damper seems fine; only time will tell.
You are 100% correct about this thing resembling a screen door closer; except it probably says Harley on there somewhere so that justifies the $500+ price tag. We used to joke that the 3 most expensive letters in the alphabet were “FAA” but H-A-R-L-E-Y sure is a close second!

I was thinking why is the cost of the Damper is so high? What is the cost of some of the other Dampers out there? Do the other Trikes other then the Harleys use a Damper? If not are they hard to control? I Know there are Dampers for Sport Bikes and some are adjustable. Just did some resarch Dampers cost from $450- $650 Most are for sport bikes one was a muilty fit for a Harley guy had to make custom brackets to get it to work right. There are some for side cars. Could not find any that would fit a TG out of the Box. Just wanted to see what was out there and if any other brands that leak .
