faber, i'm glad you answered that in the manner you did. i knew those answers going into it but i wanted one of the owners of the weapons to respond, simply out of curiosity, to gain their perspective.
...and Pheer i agree that hitting a target at range is fun. the longest i've accurately fired a weapon was on Camp Bullis with a 240 - about 650m.
.50 cal school was fun, in january my partner and i go to ADM (advanced designated marksman)...which is a watered down counter sniper school (CPEC) for the AF.

This may be a little 'off target' considering the direction this thread has taken. (That was meant to be pun.) A reason for asking a question here instead of looking in the manual for an answer, at least the reason I have done it, is to get a response from someone with personal experience with a subject.
Sometimes the manual isn't able to explain the best answer to a question about something. There are times that the way something is designed, or expected, to react is not the best way of doing something. Think of asking for input as just being a way to getting additional assistance with a question.
Somalia.. that was a F'd up situation. At least Haiti wasnt anything like it.

I missed out on Haiti. I was on profile (knee surgery). Just a lot of moving around, I heard.
4 years in the 10th Mountain.....pretty hua, man If I re-upped again, i would have requested to go there.

seriously.....that thing is an awesome weapon, in the true sense of the word "awesome." it should be feared. not for casual play. for it's intended application, it is effective. for any other purpose, I cannot imagine why one would bother.
for target shooting, the M24 was actually a lot more fun, IMO

It's really not that hard to understand. You see some folks that are really very new to biking and are intimidated by the wrenching side of things (and probably not just with bikes) and then you see folks that just don't enjoy wrenching (the whole 'classical vs. romantic' mindset, to poach a theme from Robert Pirsig). I think the remainder would just be folks that are too lazy to have already picked one up. No great puzzle.

If your never going to work on your bike, then you don't really need a service manual.
Every one else should have a service manual, even if you ask questions on-line, there is no problem asking questions, but for me to tell you what plug to pull to drain the oil VS looking at a picture of the plug's location in the book is the old saying "a picture is worth a thousand words".
As for being new to biking, if your going to work on it, cover all the bases, get the service manual AND ask the questions, they are not mutually exclusive.
In my mind what it boils down to is, how many dollars are you willing to spend on chrome( won't get you home), $60 for a service manual that can save you $$$ and might just save your life!
Hey Texas, if you're gonna brandish weapons like that I'm not gonna argue about not putting a space between "A" and "LOT". Go right a head and jam them to gether for all I care.
On a serious note - I never owned a vehicle that I didn't have a shop manual for. Firstly, I don't treat cars or bikes as throwaway items. I own them until they're all used up and I fix them along the way. Otherwise, they're just transportation.

It was extremely cold, but everywhere they sent us was really hot.
We helped clean up south Florida after Hurricane Andrew, then went back to the snow... went to Somalia, then back to the snow, went to Panama, then back to the snow, went to Haiti, then back to the snow.
