This is rule of thumb here.

I don't know much about bikes, but i probably know the same amount as the parts guy at my local dealer. When i got my bike, it already had the V&H Short Shots, but stock air filter. I bought the Screaming Eagle Heavy Breather and had them install it, later they told me the original person who installed the exhaust didn't map the computer correctly so they would have to re-map with the new air filter. From what i'm understanding there is no reason to remap with a new exhaust but there is a need with a new filter. Do they usually charge to remap when buying/installing a new air filter? If so, why didn't they just tell me they have to remap and they charge for it, why the BS about original installer not remapping for the exhaust? Is the remapping supposed to be included with purchase/installation of a new air filter, is this why they gave the excuse for the original installer not remapping, so as to get more money?

There's no stage anything flashes for the VRSC line anymore.

You must purchase a tuner of some sort, so there really weren't any options for them.

If you've left the intake alone, you're fine... although performance may suffer a little, you won't hurt anything.

That surge tells me you are running lean! Common on most all Dynas and Softails! Only cure is a tuner. The Stage 1 DL's ARE a waste of $$ as they are still a lean setting that meets EPA. The stealers have to stay within the EPA or it's their azz if and when caught!

Remember, the Stage1 DL's are designed for only the combination of SE pipes and SE Intake. Still a lean 14.7 heat machine!

Addendum:

I have those same pipes. You need a tune. They are too short and open for stock tuning.

If it were just slip-ons, it'd be fine, but you need a tune. You will have to get a SERT, or power-commander, or the like.

EDIT: If you're trying to keep costs down, you can get maps for free that are more or less... okay... from V&H for that exhaust with a high-flow filter for the V&H Fueller and for the Harley Race Tuners, so you'd just need to buy the high-flow A/C (and go topless like the rest of us cool kids) and a tuner. They can email you a map that you can download to your bike from your computer.

That's what I used for a base map to save on dyno time.

Exactly they way I feel....

Monk thanks for all the input...

but guys I'm going to write this again because it seems to be getting buried in the responses...

I got a 2009 vrscaw. The dealer threw in pipes which I chose (V&H 2-1 comp series), they did a filter change (different from stock and now topless) and were supposed to do the stage 1 download.

2 weeks after they installed the pipes I found out the download never happened...I was told it didn't need to be done. Now I wouldn't know if it did or didn't which is why I'm here trying to see if I was jipped out of a freebee.

The bike again in 3rd or 4th gear right around 3k rpm surges every so often and/or what sounds like a cough.

For those that haven't seen it here's the link to my bike on youtube:

Interesting, yeah, you need a tuner.

They goofed because they probably assumed there was a stage1 download for the Revo... but there ain't. The closed-loop function will work pretty well at keeping you safe cruising around town, but it goes back to open look around 5k rpms and sooner if you're giving it throttle obviously, so you shouldn't hurt anything too bad if most of your cruising is in that range, but once you give it throttle you're back to open loop... and the surging.

Good background song, what is the name and artist?

I don't think the pipes will stop changing colors, with or without a tuner. Headers from the jugs out, on any bike will change colors as it's the hottest spot on the exhaust system. This is why they now have the chrome heat shields on the Dynas and Softails. I don't know much about the VRS's but you got a nice bike!!!i

background song is from Kings of Leon...pipes won't change but I found a link that is used as a guide to tell what range the temp is...now what the actual temp should be is beyond me...still doing some research to find out. here's the link to the chart:

Just to re-clarify (not being a turd), there is not download for our bikes... there hasn't been since 04 or 05, you will have to purchase a tuner, like a SERT, a Super Tuner, a PowerCommander or the V&H Fueler. Something like the SERT or Super Tuner allows you to load a map on to your bike, and you'll be able to find a map that's pretty close to your setup and you'll be fine (PM me if you go this route and need help finding a map).

Something like the power commander is a piggy-back that is a piece of junk that remains on your bike and intercepts the ECM's commands before they get to the injectors. Different ways of achieving (almost) the same ends.

You will need something like this, because there is no flash or download for our bikes. And I'm 99.99% sure what happened is when the guys at the dealer installed your stuff, is, they didn't realize this (because the Evos and Twinkies have current multi-stage flashes).
