We lost a fellow Sailor out here this past weekend in Sigonella. It was raining and as he was riding in the rain and taking a turn, he lost control and his bike slid out and slammed into the guard rail. He was killed on scene. I didn't know him, but I damn sure wish he'd decided not to ride that day. He was on his way to Mineo, A Gov't housing community about 45 minutes away. There is a bus that runs from base to Mineo, and although it might have been a pain to wait around for it, that god damn slippery Lava Rock they use to pave roads here makes it worth it.
So here's to giving prayers to the family for recovery and let Explosive Ordinance Disposal Maurice Lee Quidley Jr Petty Officer 1st class United States Navy; Rest In Peace.
RIP. Was that on 417? Used to run that road between Mineo and N2 everyday. I remember the first year I was there, it didn't rain until November, and mudslides washed out quite a few of the roads.
They discontinued the bus service out to Mineo when I was there due to lack of ridership. Said it wasn't cost effective for the 5-10 people who used it.
