It gets old rehashing old news and even older bikes. The bikes have improved but if you run the crap out of anything you will be working on it. 20 dollars for a bike run and birthday party ain't bad but I can't make it that weekend.

Also, not to burst anyone's imagine of what 'hardcore' bikers own, but many also have non-Harley dirt and/or dual sport bikes for messing around with.

If I could go.....I would in a heartbeat.

Sonny is a good guy. Is he perfect? Nope. Are you? Nope.

He's a stand up dude, who will go to bat for his friends. That is admirable.

You're gonna have a hard time convincing me he dosen't have any more involvement in the club.

Again, sounds like a heck of a good time!

I read that too, and I attributed it to the fact that Harley made JUNK from about 1968 to 1983-84. Quality control was darn near zero, and the tooling was allowed to get old by AMF Management. this caused tolerances to get WAY out of wack.

Old AMF Shovels are VERY labor intensive. Not everybody likes working on them all the time. They're cool to have....personally for me, as a second bike, so I can still ride in between being a slave to the "shovel-master".

In short, he has his likes and dislikes, same as the rest of us.

Do what's right for YOU, and take his opinion for what it is, his opinion.

P.S. Since I'm over here in Afghanistan, those of you in the cave creek area should feel OBLIGATED to go on this run and have fun for me, and the rest of us over here who are missing out. The man is a LEGEND, and he is about too old to do it anymore....you are LUCKY you have the opportunity to go! It's like being able to hang out with Von Dutch before he passed. Yeah, he could be an a$$hole, but it would still be a treat!

I'd love to be able to sit back years from now, after he's gone, and be able to tell people, "yeah I knew him, we talked about stuff....we even went for a ride together, and partied drank, and had a hell of a good time, his club was there too, nobody was getting beat up....hell everybody was just havng a good time!"

Think about it...how can you pass?

Any guy who is 70+ and still rides is cool as hell, IMHO.

My dad is 76 and rides his shiny black hog all the time!

My how times have changed. I remember reading by-laws of several of the major clubs and it not only said "must own a Harley-Davidson motorcycle", but said they must maintain them in running order or they were subject to punishment up to and including their main back patch until they got the bike back on the road.

Still true for the most part.

From the Bylaws of one traditional MC;

"No more than 30 days a year 'down time'. After 30 days that members Chapter will pay National $500.00"

And there are more severe 'down time' individual Chapter rules for Prospect and Probationary individuals, which more or less states NO down time for Regional runs, National runs, and Funerals..

I don't know how many of you were riding back in the early 70's but I've saw numerous scoots loose rod bearings between 10 and 20k. In '77 I bought my first new FXE ($3640.00) and it used oil from day one. Taking it back to the dealer he always said the same thing, "Ha, it's not broken in yet". Well at 3,500 miles I pulled the front cylinder and found the ring gap to be .060" and two nice scars where the ends of the rings cut groves in the cylinders. (Yep, both cylinders!) Bored it .020" over and put new pistons in. At 20,000 I start to hear a light clunking in the bottom end. OK, MoFo you are History. In my opinion that's pretty bad. In the '80's I Switched over to BMW's, a 1981 R100RS. You could run the Piss out of the BMW all day long and it didn't leak, smoke or crap fall off. I rode to Daytona by myself (in the dark) the first year and ran almost 500 miles at 75 to 100 mph. Somewhere around Jacksonville I blew by a guy ridding a rigid frame Harley and he decided to try to hang on. I never changed my speed which was close to 100 mph, after about 4 or 5 miles he decides he's had enough. I had to hand it to the guy 'cause he was ridding. It wasn't until two years ago that I sold the last BMW and bought another H-D. Just like a bunch of you, I've been a hard-ass on Harleys. I've been on the side of the road broke down and J.O. decides to yell "Get a Honder" and I yelled back F'Your Mamma Redneck. I am glad that H-D is making better motorcycles today. I like my '98 Roadglide near as much as I loved my 1965 Pan. I've owned about a dozen Harleys since I was 18. And my two favorites were the '65 Panhead and my current '98 Roadglide. In the 35 years that I've been riding, if my motorcycle was on a trailer or in a truck, that sumbeach was Broke. I can understand Sonny's comment after ridding 12,000 to 20,000 miles a year. I just moved from a town where some of Sonny's kin lives and just like Joe above I'd have to say the exact same about Sonny. He's a legend and he's still kicking. If he want's to ride a Chinese Scooter, I'm cool with it.
