the insurance company says my frame is split, and that my bike is totalled. i saw it when they loaded it on the trailer and all that looked wrong with it is the engine guard was bent. I have no idea what to look for but my friends tell me its the law that if the frame is split the bike has to be totalled out. i'm a welder by trade, and i figure they're going to throw me a little bitr of money and then part my bike out. is it possible to fix a split frame? please excuse the n00b question this is my first bike.

Look it over, If you think you can repair it and that it will be safe to ride then buy the bike back from the insurance company.
Main thing is your safety. Check EVERYTHING over well and look at parts from all angles. I had a wrecked sportbike come into my shop and everything looked alright on the frame. It wasn't till you pulled off the airbox to find the box was covering up a hairline crack. That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about.
You could always hunt around for a clean title frame and then the bike wouldn't be a salvaged unit.

They should be paying you what it was worth before you wrecked it. You may loose if you had a bunch of uncovered accessories in which case you may want to buy it back from them.
Even if you fix it it will still have a salvage title. The laws varies from state to state as to what is required to register it.
Just because the frame is shot is not a reason to total a bike unless it would cost more to replace the frame than the bike is worth. It is true most insurance companys will not allow a frame to be welded, but a Harley dealer can order a new frame with the original VIN stamped on it. They just have to send the original neck, with the VIN on it, back to the moco.
the bike is an 06 with maybe 5 grand left on the loan. i ain't got a chance to look at it past when they put it on the trailer but i just got out of trhe hospital. should i get someone else to look at it? also could someone tellme what a salvage title is and if thats bad?
A salvage title is a title with a notation that the vehicle has been damaged in excess of approximately 70% of its pre-accident market value. The exact percentage depends on the insurance provider and any applicable laws and regulations. This notation gets applied to a title when an insurance company pays a total-loss claim on a vehicle, but then sells the vehicle at an auction center. If the vehicle is kept by its owner through a buy-back program, then the vehicle will retain a clean title. A properly restored vehicle is still safely drivable even if it is technically considered a total loss by an insurance company, particularly with older vehicles where even minor cosmetic damage would cost more to fix than the vehicle's pre-accident market value. you should talk to your insurance broker
