I always wondered about the use of carbon fiber for helmets.
ACC helmets are 50% carbon fiber and 50% kevlar.

Well, good they caught it.

Is is the CFC (the carbon) breaking down, the kevlar delaminating from it, or...what? Anyone know?

Glad I never bit the bullet on the ACC's. For the price they charge, 2 recalls in 2 years is out of line.

Crap. Mine's from 08/08. I tried calling ACC and their voice mailbox is full. I guess word is getting out about the recall.

Me, too.

Carbon fiber composite (CFC) looks cool and stuff, but is only strong in one direction, which is why industrial and aerospace applications of CFC have elaborate layups of CFC oriented in every direction of anticipated stress. A (roughly) hemispherical form is not a logical application of CFC. I would guess that the CFC is there for weight-saving and cosmetic purposes, while the kevlar is there for strength. But, still, a DOT-approved helmet won't endure the stresses of, say, an aircraft wing. But if you've every seen a plane wreck up close, you see what happens to CFC on impact: it's not meant to absorb impact; it's meant to hold shape under load (prolonged stress).

The stuff is notoriously difficult to adhere anything to. So if it's the liners separating from the helmets.....

For other applications, CFC is a miracle-material, though.

But, as popular as they are, I hope that they sort it out for the sake of all those riders.

Need to put in a call, too... My helmet falls in about what some of those mentioned does. I hope it does not need to be completely replaced. I had to send it back and get the straps modded to get it to fit my head in the first place. LOL
