A question/opinion poll. I have an opportunity to purchase a 2003 FLHRCI with only 2200 miles on it well below the market retail price. The dealership wants me to purchase an extended service plan for an additional $774.00. The bike was traded in by the original owner for a QUAD that he felt he would get more use out of. My question is: after being in a controlled environment storage (the bike is in excellent shape, brandnew & not broken in) but is the extended service plan something necessary? I do my own services, in-so-far-as oil, lube, filter, tires, etc. So what to do??
Let me add, HD calls it an ESP but in actuality it is a 1 yr warranty for a used bike. Thanks SCOTEH & TIBADOE

Reason: Clarification
It does sound like a one year warranty to me. To call it an extended service plan would mean it covers all maintenance services for a year.
I bought a three year "Platinum VIP" prepaid maintenance plan for my 07 Ultra. It cost $3000 and covers ALL wear parts, including tires, brakes, battery, etc. Tomorrow will be two years since I bought the bike, and I've spent (at their high rates, y'know) $3700 of the plan. That's an average of $1850 per year in the first two years. One heck of a discount I would say. So, if you put a lot of miles on the bike, its a real bargain to do it that way.
I'm too old and disabled to do my own work, so this really works out good for me.

WHen I bought my 2000 FLHTPI it was traded in by a local PD for a newer model. I never purchased an extended warranty previously, but since this was a used bike that I could not vouch for with certainty, I decided to buy the ESP for 3 years. In 2007, it spun and inner cam bearing and took out the motor. ESP covered the repairs including new engine cases, valves, cams, oil pump, cam support plate, almost a new motor. No questions asked. A few months back, my ECM took a dive as did the cam position sensor, all paid for by the ESP. A few days before it expired, I opted to renew it for 5 more years. So basically, I have an extended warranty on the bike that does not expire until June of 2014. Essentially a 14 year long bike warranty. So in my case, it WAY more than paid for itself.

For $3700 you could had a rebuilt motor at the same price.
