Well my buddy left this morning on a test run to Canada in preparation for this event. This is the first time he has been to Canada and the first time he has had a passport. He wants to see what it is like crossing the border so he will know what to expect when the big day comes.
I don't think he has focused on anything but this event for the last three months and will be a strong competitor.

I am the author of the above MTF message. I am probably going to enter the Hoka Hey Challenge if I can work out an affordable rental and insurance deal for 21 days rental of a 2010 Road Glide (6.2 gallon gas tank, stiffer, stronger frame, and other improvements that have gotten my attention). I am in contact with three Harley dealers, one a close personal friend, but almost 1500 miles north of me in Beaumont, Texas.
I have the proven ability to ride 21 hours per day chasing bonuses in competitive LD rallies lasting between 27 and 36 hours, but I will have to find out if I can do 20 hours per day for 7 consecutive days. I won't have a Russell seat or a 5.8 gallon auxiliary fuel cell on the Harley like I have on my BMW, but I will have serious auxiliary lights and GPS. The turn-by-turn instructions given at the start of each 1,000 mile leg will make the GPS useless except for finding gas stations and returning to a missed turn in the least amount of time.
I just went to MapQuest and it gave me the following:
Total Travel Estimates: 90 hours 26 minutes / 5319.08 miles
That is the shortest distance and as much interstate highway as possible. I understand that the route will actually be 7000 miles and the first check point will be in Mississippi. The MapQuest route does not come close to Mississippi, it takes you straight up through Georgia into Tennessee.
I would love to be on the team selecting the route, that would be fun!
John Ryan rode 5,598 miles from Prudhoe Bay to Key West in 86 hours 31 minutes this past June 6-9. That is total elapsed time start to finish including the infamous James Dalton Highway (Haul Road) - 414 miles of gravel and mud made even slicker from the calcium chloride used to control dust. It was snowing, sleeting and raining when John covered the distance in 8 hours and 2 minutes. A lot of flat track style riding to average over 50 mph in that sh*t.
jim
whats considered an affordable rental.your still going to spend some money on a windshield
and maybe the seat of course you could resell those parts on ebay.i wonder if a ultra would be a better choice with taller windshield and lowers

$ 1,000 - 2 sets of tires and 2 oil & filter changes
$ 2,000 - food & lodging for 22 to 24 days

$ 6,000 - boss has okayed
any willing sponsors - if so, invest in John Ryan, the best in the world at extreme long distance rides. he has the proven ability to ride 20 hours per day for 11 consecutive days. I am seriously thinking about giving $5,000 to John to ride in lieu of me riding. I cannot stay with John for 24 hours, much less 7 days.

I too, am in awe of John Ryan's demonstrated abilities, but do you think the organizers would allow a Ringer to enter? Sure, he'd be riding a Harley, but...
To quote from Saturday Night live..."To Bill Brasky, the best damn salesman in the office!"
yeah i figure 10% of the people wont make it out of the keys. there are a ton of rules, and fist place wins $500000 in cash or gold. it is a very cool thing. i'd love to have members of the forum tracking the race accross the country. we should try to set something up.
I'll be carrying a SPOT 2 satellite tracking device. The link to my recent Ride Around Texas satellite tracks is given below:
The above was done using a borrowed first generation SPOT tracking device. We had hoped to do this ride in 65 hours, but the weather north of Padre Island was severe enough to take shelter for an hour, traffic in the Rio Grande valley horrendous, and an ice storm in the panhandle plus 16 hours of 33 deg to 36 deg rain (wet, cold and miserable)
