I'm looking into buying my first Harley and looking at the FXSTB. The new 09 models are a little overpriced for my budget, but I've found a few used ranging from '02 to '07. The '02 runs the 88B motor while the '07 and newer models run the 96B motor. Does anyone have any experience, reviews, raves, complaints about either? I'm leaning towards the 96 for the 6-speed tranny and the added HP, but it's a relatively new motor, so not sure which way to go.
Let loose - tell me what you think. Thanks everyone!!

I'd go back to an EVO 80" in a heartbeat.Plenty of power, durable, fewer moving parts.

I had a 88B and put 32,000 miles on that motor in a FLSTCI and now have a 08 Street Glide with the 96ci. The 96ci has so much more power it's the definite choice. yeah it runs a little hotter but put some amsoil in it and ride the crap out of it. Or get the stage 1 done later when you get the cash.
I would say it depends how important engine size is for you and how you well you deal with engine heat. The 96B will feel hotter than the 88B, particularly when you are sitting in traffic and it is hot outside. If you live in a cooler climate and intend to get a Stage 1 done and maybe pick up an XIED for the motor, then a 96B would be fine. If you are in a hotter climate and don't want to deal with engine heat issues then the 88B might be a better choice.

I own an 88 and rented a 96 while visiting my brother in Denver last summer. When in traffic, I had to stand up on the pegs because the engine was so hot it was burning my thighs. I love my 88 and with stage one (including dynojet carb kit) it will out run a new Rocker C. Don't know about the others because I've not run up against them.

I have both motors and I like the power from the 96A motor. The heat is not a problem just buy a fan. I have been riding the 88A motor everyday year round. I will drive up to 110 MPH with the 88A and can do 130+ with 96A motor plus you have 6 speeds.
They're both fine. My Dad has the 88 however, it's been built out to a massive beast with everything done and there is no complaints there. My brother and I have the new 96B motors. They rae hotter but if you let em breathe properly all will be good. Hell, new Harleys sound like mopeds anyway, a stage 1 is pretty much mandatory in my opinion. But they will of course run good and strong until you do that, and even if you don't no problem(96b) Just my 0.2
