Thank you all so much. I do have the parts manual and the service manual. I will post some pictures of where I am at on this project. I am trying to put back together something I did not take apart. Always a fun project.
Had a 81 as my first H.D. Hard to find one that hasnt been altered. Had drag bars, cased were powered coated. engine wrinkle paint with top fins sanded. reflectors on side of rear fender, padded backrest with a small leather pouch that had leather threaded through it. If it was made by mid year 81, if original, the emblem on the tank would have the little amf above harley emblem. It was a one piece decal. Spoke to someone in design that told me at the buyout they went and cut the amf off of the decals before making the new ones without the amf. These are some of the usual things I see different. If I can get some pictures on here or send them to you, I will.
The "sturgis" in the big picture is not correct.I has a final chain drive. The "real" one `s have a belt drive secondary as you know if you have the rest of the bike.I believe the original exhaust would have the cross-over which went under/behind the carb.I had (in attic) the original pipes off my old `81 low rider.I`ll look and see if I didn`t throw them away after all these years.Good luck with your retoration.Go to a bigger swap meet and someone there should have a set of head pipes to fit an `80 shovel.Toby
That one in the big picture for sale is severely modified, Pipes are wrong and the battery box/oil tank are wrong. Air cleaner, horn, headlight, triple trees, and handlebars are all wrong. forward controls, brake lines and rear caliper bracket all all wrong also. Nice Bike butif someone is trying to restore, that is not the picture to go by.
I have the header pipe for the original 2 into 1 exhaust from the 1977-1980 fx series, it's a little rough, but there, some elbow grease and re-chroming should bring it around, and if not, all the dimensions are there to have one custom built.
Tim I am planning a trip to the HD Museum next week, if you will PM me and tell me what you want to see I will try and get a good picture if they have one on display.
No shovelhead Sturgis models on display, only a '91. Was there on the 22nd of October.
