I just put on a new set of Metzelers less than one month ago and the rear 880 Marathon after 70 miles broke the belt in the tire. This punctured the tube and the tire went flat.
I was told by the local Harley dealer that Metzelers should not be ude on a large bike such as the Heritage. The tire do not have the sidewall support like the Dunlops. I think the dealer is pulling my leg - anybody chime in on this?
I've been running Metzler ME880's on my Fatboy for 6 years and have not had any issues like posted. I think the dealer is full of it!!
Yes, HD dealer's will tell you anything so you can buy from them! Geez.... I got 12k out of my last ME880 rear tire..and the front is still in great shape...just replaced the rear with another ME880... and NO I didn't buy it from the dealer... Of course any tire can have issues, but it's unbelievable what some dealers will say so you buy what THEY sell!

I put front and rear Metzelers on in May this year. The OE Dunlops had 8800 miles and the rear would have made about 2K more but I decided to change both before I rode to the beach. The Metzeler rear is now SHOT and it doesn't even have 5K on it yet. The Metzelers handle great but I cannot buy a new rear tire every time I change the oil. Most of my riding is two up and probably always will be. I am changing to something else this time...may go back to the Dunlops. Anyone have a better tire recommendation?

You've been using Metzler recommended tire pressures and not the HD (Dunlop) pressures, right?

Yes...Metzeler says 38 in the rear and even though I'm not a "check them before every ride" kinda guy, I have kept them at or near the recommended pressure. Like I said, they handle great but the wear has been less than what I expected. I always thought of them as one of the best back in the "old" days...
I am about due for a new rear tire and was considering Metzeler because Avon's are getting too expensive, but after seeing this, I think I will bite the bullet and pay a little more for the Venom X.
