I'm starting to gather parts to convert the old MM system over to carb. Can someone explain the differences in the first 5 numbers? I know the last 2 are for the year+. I have a 2000 Road King and need to find a carb. Can I use a newer year carb? Older? Does it matter?

I have a 2004 FLSTF with the stock CV carb. I have had it back to the dealer three times and they have not helped the poor performance/idling problem it has. I am planning to change to either a Mikuni or S&S carb by next season. I was wondering which carb is the best overall chioce. I plan to street /road ride and drag race also. I would appreciate any input from those familiar with either of these makes of carbs.

My idle is set at 1000 rpm's but when I come to a stop it idles at 1500 until I engage the clutch and load the engine, then it drops back to 1000 rpm's any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
