I have to be back somewhat early for an early evening appointment so I hope to be home before 3. If anyone has the day off and would like to join us, post up. Joe, we can plan to be back earlier if your work schedule requires. We are thinking about an early start after a quick breakfast.

When I first called the number to gather information on this rally, I spoke with Mike Murphey, the owner, himself. He seemed like a nice guy, and I was comfortable with coming to this rally to spend my money in hopes of making some in return. Though upon arriving at the rally, my outlook quickly changed, and drastically so. It was only Friday, the first night of the actual kick-off to the Iron Angels, and my hands have already been completely tied.

I am a certified piercer, my partner is a certified tattoo artist with thirty-eight years in the industry that is OSHA certified. We have been here since Wednesday, and had told the people running this show upfront what our situation is. Thanks to Joe, the manager under Mr. Murphey, who was quite quick to tell my partner and myself that we can not make any money at this show, due to the fact that his affiliations with a certain biker group, only allow one tattoo artist, also affiliated with this biker group, to tattoo at the rally. Sure, I can respect that, but I paid them, up to the last dime in my pocket to get into this show, with the hopes and understandings that I was going to be able to get enough fuel money to atleast get to the next spot.

ALL LIES!!!

Not only have we been shut down, but this rally has turned out to be nothing but an ass raping of vendors, spectators, and whoever else wants to walk through that entry gate. Vendors are being charged double rent for their spots, even vendors that have been coming to this show for the past ten years are getting a reeming. This is no rally, this is not a fun place to be, and Mr. Murphey is allowing, AND CONDONING all of this to take place with his own doings, as well as allowing his rude 'help' to be just that, whom have done nothing but harass us since they've taken our money. If half of the vendors come back next year, it will be a suprise.

At this point, we are contacting churches, and whoever else we can contact for help, this rally is nowhere near what it claims to be. And the great state of Texas is allowing these people to steal year after year. How is that allowed to happen?

I posted this in Road trip section as well...but ...

11/14/09 I was out that way...Alpine TX, on "business" so the rental Taurus and I took a 300 mile loop through the Big Bend area. Started at Alpine, out to Marfa, and Presideo then along the river and back through Marathon. Included a side trip into Chiso Mt basin...not to be missed.

Locals say mid October until late March is best temperatures, some facilities within the parks are closed in summer. It is astounding...I have traveled a LOT and seen most mountain ranges in the US and some counties but never saw the diversity of size/shapes found here in Big Bend. It is stark and almost no vegetation except scrub and cactus, think desert without sand. In the entire day I saw only 3 road runners and a fox. Do NOT pass up a gas station. Road condition is very good to excellent, varying from great tight sweepers to very tight twisty, to and from the road is excellent 75 mph limit and provides some elevation change with nice sweepers What little food is available is very good, rest rooms are almost as scarce as gas....for info on camping you better call parks and get the right answers.

I plan on riding it with a couple other bikes in March...in the opposite direction so the views are new. John

Please See also Post on this Thread concerning my Proposed revised PLAN B on POST #6 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All of you folks from AZ and NM. I need your input here please.....I posted this here instead of the Road Trip section so I am in hopes of gathering info from the "LOCALS" as this will maybe assure me of not ending on to much of a "Goose Chase" and Lost! I can get lost easy enough!! on my own. All your input will be appriciated!! Thanks Again.....Marty.

Proposed South Western Trip
Trip begins middle of March (12, 2010). I have arranged this into Days as I would like to know from all of you if this looks doable in the time frame and with any stops I have added as well. Please include your points of interest, and MUST stops as I am not familiar with this part of the country. I need to be in Payson AZ. Around noon as my trip passes this location (I have a friend to meet there at lunch time). I also have to be in Mesa sometime to see a bud as well. Otherwise I AM OPEN TO ALL INFO, STOPS DO’S AND DON’T’S!
Some pretrip info:
1.	I have a RG reserved already leaving day 1 from Dealer.
2.	I want to tent camp 99% of time if possible with exceptions of my planed two stops above.
So her is want I have thus far, I will be adding Points of interest also but please make your suggestions in your comments for each day I have listed……….thanks in advance.

DAY 1: Leave dealer at approx 9am (Friday morning) stop for supplies at local Wal-Mart, etc. Head to Kingman Az. Stop at a customers location there for 15-20 minutes. Leave and check out Kingman, what is a must see? Leave Kingman still Friday on RT 66 and check out sites on RT66 toward Seligman re-enter I40 at Ash Fork? Or continue on RT66 to Flagstaff Staying the night at the KOA on US HWY 89. Is this all doable in one day?? What should I see on this day??

DAY 2. (Saturday) Leave Flagstaff KOA travel RT 180 to RT64 up to Grand Canyon staying in Grand Canyon for the night (Only one night? Two Nights?) Enough to see staying on Saturday and Sunday and leaving Monday Morning? Thoughts?

Day3. Either still staying in Grand Canyon OR>>> Heading out park on RT 64 to Cameron going north on RT 89 and taking RT 160 through Tuba City through Kayenta The FOUR CORNERS> At this point I think due to the distance, terrain etc is this doable in a day? PLUS once I arrive at the four Corners were do I tent camp?? Four Corners I am told has no camping…..I will either need to go into Ship Rock NM an Motel it or head up toward Cortez CO. and stay at the Mesa Verde NAT Park ?? This leg of the trip I am not sure of the distances/weather factors etc. It seems like not to many places to tent camp in this area. Would it be better/Smarter to stay the night in Kayenta (Motel or Tent place if available) then continue the next day (4) into the four corners?

Day 4 (DAY 5?) continue into see Four Corners if stayed at Kayenta otherwise…….. Leave Either Cortez CO/ Shiprock NM. Head toward Albuquerque via RT 550 making tops along the way?? WERE what places? End up this day around Truth or Consequences NM off I 25 staying at the Elephant Butte Lake SP tent Camp. Ideas?

Day 5: (6) Leave Truth or Consequences NM taking RT 152 to Silver City Checking out this area, Check out Gila Cliff Dwellings Nat Mon. on RT 15 what else around here to see? Possible stay at the City of Rocks State Park Tent site? Or ?? Wanting to make way (RT 180) toward Alpine AZ keeping this in mind> Stay closer near Alpine? Were?

Day 6: Leave City of Rocks? Hopefully I am closer to alpine area, Head to Edgar AZ taking RT 260 to Slow Low AZ. Then RT 260 to HEBER and to PAYSON…good Route to take?? Doable?? Need to be in Payson by noon (Day doesn’t matter). Take care of business in Payson leave ands head into Mesa to see Bud/ Doable in the same day?? Stay at Bud’s in Mesa for the night.
Day7: Leave Mesa with stop in Peoria AZ. And Customer visit just outside Peoria AZ. For a very brief stop. Leave taking RT 60 to RT 89 Toward Prescott and ultimately up to SEDONA and Jerome area. What to see do here?? Many place to tent camp in this area so this is open……..

Day 8: This day and direction is open….depending if this as listed works out as “Planned” then may cut back “down” toward Quartzsite and back up through Lake Havasu into Kingman from the south and back to dealer.

I have upto 10 days to use but must be back in LAS Vegas on the 21 of March

OK you folks from AZ and NM Help me out here I think you all..Marty.

The Tucson guys were asking me how to get to the Heart Attack Grill, so I promised to show them the shortest possible route:icon_goofygrin: See ride plan below.

Phx group will meet at the River Bottom in Florence (2501 N, Hwy 79), kickstands up at 8:30AM.

Phx group will then proceed to Oracle Junction where we will meet the Tucson group in the restaurant parking lot. Kickstands up at 10AM.

Entire group will then head "directly" to the Heart Attack Grill, with I'm sure a couple of stops along the way. We should be there in plenty of time for the previously planned 2PM meet and greet with a few of the CA forum members.

As always, everyone is welcome to join.

It was a great day for a ride from Houston to San Antonio (Fort Sam Houston).

Depart 7:20 from Park and Ride west of Houston on I-10. with police escort. My guess is about 400 bikes.

Nov. 9 update: "Quick count" from the Texas Honor Ride website is 600 bikes, 830 attendees, $86,000 donated.
http://www.texashonorride.org/

The sign up fee of $25 is donated to help wounded soldiers where government compensation doesn't cover the financial losses from being wounded while serving their country. Commemorative t-shirts were for sale for $25. The insert at the top right of the above photo is taken at the Interstate 10 Rest Area about 60 miles east of San Antonio. It was the final re-grouping area before entering the military base.

There were trikes (big and small, regular and reverse), but mostly bikes.

The police escort was good, but completely absent in San Antonio at the messy lane changes from I-10 to I-35 and the exit to Fort Sam Houston. I think we pissed off some regular folks. I noticed some cars illegally driving on the shoulder of the interstate to get past.

After entering the base, we were directed to a park with a short gravel road and lots of grass parking area, as in the photo below.

There was a small paved parking area for those who were squeamish about driving on gravel, or didn't want to get their bikes dusty.

My Rant for the Ride:

For a police escorted group ride of 100's of bikers on a staight and open Interstate, I was surprised by the number of times the group changed speed from 40 mph to 80 mph. This happened constantly thoughout the 190 mile ride. It's like some of these dudes don't know how to hold a constant distance to the bike ahead. When you are 200 bikes behind the leader, the speed changes come up at you fast. Not just back off the throttle, but hit the brakes!

The constant speed fluctuations pissed me off :icon_hyper: since I was trying to use the 6th gear on my new '09 Street Bob. Most of the ride was 45 to 65 mph and changing all the time. I used 4th gear more than I used 6th. :( IMHO, 6th gear on this bike is NFG below 65 mph.

On the positive side, it was a good ride with no incidents and it was for a worthwhile cause. The weather was excellent. And the barbeque lunch (catered by Rudy's) was the best. The live band was OK.

I took my own route home, taking a detour to ride the River Road between Gruene and Canyon Lake. Looking at the map, one would think this would be a kick ass biking road.

The problem is, the road is infested with river rafting and resort cabins along its entire length. Driveways are around every blind curve, and almost all the curves are blind. Not a good road for testing your cornering skills. Population density and/or tourists is the problem.

I rode some back roads home to try and wear off the square tread that the Interstate put on my tires.

487 miles for my day trip.

Would I do it again? Ask me in about a year's time. :)
I wouldn't ride the Street Bob if there is a next time. I would ride my '03 Road King for sure. It's only a 5 speed gearbox, so I won't be having to use the brakes all the time.
