Based on the 2009 Softail owner's manual, H-D's recommendation is to change my oil 3 or 4 times a year based upon "lowest ambient temperature." Does anyone switch from 20W50 in the spring to SAE 50 in the summer, then back to 20W50 in the fall, and finally back to 10W40 in the winter??? What if you only have a thousand miles on your 20W50 oil, whould you change it any wy??? If you put 20,000 miles a year on your HD you gotta change your oil about every 3 months anyway. My next oil change I'll be using Red Line synthetic. So what's your best advice: seasonal oil changes even if you haven't gotten many miles on your current oil, or just keep the same oil regardless of seasonal temperature changes and just change it when 5,000 miles rolls around?

My 2009 SG has a small leak more like a sweat that seems to develop in the front lower part of the engine case below the oil filter. When I take a semi long ride of 100 miles or so it sweats oil and leaves a few drops after I park it. It doesn't seem to be coming from the filter but somewhere below it. Any one else have any experience with this issue? Any ideas on what to do to fix it? I had this leak indicated at first service at dealer. Obviously it didn't fix it. I was hoping to do all the oil services myself, but the leak has to be addressed first. I may be going back to the dealer before warrenty exspires so I don't have problems down the road. Any help will be greatly appretiated .

I want to switch my 2007 Ultra over to synthetic and stopped by a local shop to price oil. I purchased the bike just a few weeks ago and now it is just shy of 5000 miles. Their mechanic said that after draining out the old engine oil that there would still be about 1/2 quart of old oil in the case. He said he would add some new oil and turn the motor over to pump the old oil out. Is there not also a plug on the bottom of the case to drain that oil out instead of pumping it out? I've changed my own oil in all my vehicles for 30 years and I'd like to do this myself.
