I rode the Parkway from 181 in Pineola to Blowing Rock, back across Shull's Mill Rd. to Foscoe, on up the mountain on NC 105 to Linville. This is the latest I've rode on the Parkway, the gates are usually up because of ice. It is cool now, in the 40's up there, but not cold. The cool air is so clear, you can see forever! I met 2 other bikers, in about 20 miles of Parkway, it is almost empty except for the deer and some hardcore college kids doing some rock climbing. The last couple of weeks have been unusually warm, so the Train is still rolling, almost no traffic makes for a wonderful ride!

I visited the European HOG Festival in Port Grimaud (St Tropez area) last May, it turned out to be a good rally with fine weather, good rides, lots of varied music and a bar on the beach.

Thinking of a road trip next May to the Euro Festival, Ex Plymouth to Santander 2nd May, returning Santander to Plymouth 13th May (if my memory serves me well on the Brittany ferry dates). A number of companies advertise the chalets/cabins on the festival site with a few hotels nearby.

Initial thoughts are a 3 day trip down to the festival, taking in some interesting sights and similar 3 or 4 days coming back on a slightly different route. Initial research shows places such as the Milau bridge (just off the direct route), Lourdes, and a number of medival French towns or villages.

Anyone interested in a small possee to to some early sun (hopefully)? There's a HD dealer in Plymouth which may be a good place to fire up the hog.

11/14/09 I was out that way...Alpine TX, on "business" so the rental Taurus and I took a 300 mile loop through the Big Bend area. Started at Alpine, out to Marfa, and Presideo then along the river and back through Marathon. Included a side trip into Chiso Mt basin...not to be missed.

Locals say mid October until late March is best temperatures, some facilities within the parks are closed in summer. It is astounding...I have traveled a LOT and seen most mountain ranges in the US and some counties but never saw the diversity of size/shapes found here in Big Bend. It is stark and almost no vegetation except scrub and cactus, think desert without sand. In the entire day I saw only 3 road runners and a fox. Do NOT pass up a gas station. Road condition is very good to excellent, varying from great tight sweepers to very tight twisty, to and from the road is excellent 75 mph limit and provides some elevation change with nice sweepers What little food is available is very good, rest rooms are almost as scarce as gas....for info on camping you better call parks and get the right answers.

I plan on riding it with a couple other bikes in March...in the opposite direction so the views are new. John

can anyone tell me if they have done both the estes park 34 route, and the independence pass route. i would like to know which is a better scenic route. also, have any of you done both as a loop?? 2 to 3 days maybe. i may have the better half fly in to denver?? and loop it with me.

there will be many more questions, as this trip has taken flight, and the planning is getting fun.

June 1, 2009. Leaving Portland, OR my first day, I rode to Prineville and cut through on 27. Little did I know that it was 14 miles of dusty gravel road from the reservoir to the road going to Burns. Big rain drops and dust made me glad I had cut 3” off the top of the windshield. From Burns, I rode through French Glenn and gassed up in Fields. Only two gas stations from Burns to Winnemucca and one or both can be out of gas. Next year I am going to carry a spare gallon of gas. Spent the night in Winnemucca. 534 miles as I remember. The ride through Nevada is mostly boring with long straight roads for 30 miles and then a slight adjustment and 20 or 30 more miles of boring road. Leaving Austin after lunch, I encountered some great curves on the way to Tonopah. I rode around in Nevada until I popped out at Bryce NP in Utah. From there I rode across Northern Arizona to Cortez, Co. Dropped down into New Mexico and over to Texas. The wind blows strong in Texas and Oklahoma. After 50 miles leaning into the wind you begin to think it is normal until you pass a huge silo that blocks the wind and stands the bike straight. Hard to pitch a tent in the Oklahoma wind. Arkansas and Missouri were nice roads and many little towns. Kansas and Iowa were boring. 100 miles of hard rain in Nebraska. Replaced the rear tire in Rapid City, SD. Visited the Badlands and Mt. Rushmore and clipped the corner of Wyoming and across Montana, Idaho, Washington and home. Longest day was 783 miles and I avoided freeways most of the way. Best scenery was leaving Livingston, Montana at 6 in the morning heading West. Prettier than the Alps. Total mileage for the trip was 5,300. My son gave me a 2 man tent which I used almost every night. I am leaving in May as soon as the weather looks good and heading to New Orleans or some whichever. Its nice not to have a real destination as the fun is in the ride and stopping when the mood strikes. Next year I am not going to take so much stuff. I never used the pot or frying pan so that eliminates cooking oil and utensils. I have a Jet Boil and it took care of all my cooking needs. I packed to many clothes. May all your rides be as enjoyable as mine was. At my age I may start repeating myself so better quit while I’m ahead.

The wife and I rode to Myrtle Beach on an overnight trip this past weekend. I had mixed feelings about going there but we got a good room rate on short notice so off we went. After talking to several people in the city, business owners and citizens alike, I really feel sorry for most of them. None wanted to eliminate the original HD bike week but the second bike week was getting so out of hand that something had to be done. Trash in the streets, trash in private yards, condos and hotels with thousands of dollars in damages, etc. (I know I would not want to live there during that week) They could not eliminate only the second week without the NAACP getting involved so there was really no alternative. The elected city officials have to be very cautious about how they couch their discussions of this issue. Once again the many suffer because of the outrageous behavior of the few. What a shame.

A group of maybe 3 or 4 couples are planning a vacation to Colorado from Illinois. We were thinking of maybe 4 or 5 days around Denver riding and 3 or 4 days around Colorado Springs. Is it feasible to have a home base to return too each night . Saves on pulling the trailers with us everyday and unpacking. Didn't know if that it was possible to ride different destination each day and return to home base. If so we are looking for a biker friendly motel around Denver as well as Colorado Springs. We don't really want to stay in the downtown areas of eah city. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help we can get!!! Also any great routes to ride would also be helpful!!
