My parts book does '87-'90. Any body have one for older models? They don't provide the part number for the actual fairing in my book either. Mine mounts with a bracket on each side of the forks with 4 studs molded into the batwing. I have to get to the bolts thru the headlight opening on mine since I have an inner fairing.

I read that and dug out my copy of the same book. Strange they don't have outer fairing part numbers for any of the faired models, but they do for all the other parts.

Does an '84 have the earlier glass-fibre batwing, or a later plastic one? I don't know when they swapped over. I understood the g/f one I have on my bike was off an '83 bike.

Thumbs up Had the old style but changed up

I had the stock one on my 94 and sold it for the cost of an 03 including the gauges.
The old style is available on Ebay, I've seen them and marveled at how much they go for.
I'll tell you though that the early model one mounts a lot more solid than the late model. The late model one is easier to remove and access the electrics. Also the early models the radio hole needs a cover if you don't install a radio and it's hard to find as well as the radio mounting brackets are near impossible to get a hold of.
There are only two gauge mounting positions, fuel and voltage, I changed the voltage out for an oil pressure gauge.
Anyway, six of one or one half dozen of another which ever one you prefer is the right one they both fit.

I've got the 84 to 86 FLt parts book and it doesn't list the part number either.

The brackets which attach to the fork and provide the upper two connect points for the fairing are listed as 58151-83 and 58154-83 so this is probably an 'old' style fairing. Looks like fiberglass to me. A bud with an 85 has the same bizzaro windhield connection but has an inner fairing he says was stock. Mine didn't have an inner - might have been an undocumented mid-year change in 85 since it's not shown that way in the parts book.

85 didn't have an inner faring. There was an official HD accessory inner faring like insert available for it, though. Not really "stock" but it was official HD. I looked it up in my 86 accessory catalog and posted the part numbers a couple months ago. 86 was the first year for the inner faring from the factory. I have that same 84-86 parts manual, and yeah, the part numbers for the faring aren't in it. There is a little fine print thing that says something like "for painted parts, see dealer's catalog."

gnafin, what's wrong with the faring you have? Fiberglass can be fixed pretty easily. Even if it's a shattered series of garbage, you can put it back together so that you can't tell it ever had a problem, at least from the outside.
