Default New clutch cable adjustment issue, loose

Previous owner had my '96 fxdwg set up with foot clutch. I swapped with new controls and a new clutch cable. Can't for the life of me get the cable to tighten up and give me clutch pressure. Tried the following:

- adjusting clutch nut several times per spec
- positioning and checking of ramp & ball assembly, cable attachment assembly
Keeping the cable as upright as possible inside the tranny cover.
- adjustment of cable barrel every which way.

Wondering if there is something missing inside the cover or in the tranny pushrod area? Angry help is appreciated.

Are you sure the new cable is the same length as the old cable?

They probably are but those are for hand clutch applications and stock handlebars.
Those would be way too long for a foot clutch I would think.
Granted I have no experience with a foot clutch but I think you would need a shorter cable to run one.

Also...double check the thrust bearing race on the trapdoor side of the tranny as if you have it apart you may as well replace it before it fails.

I might have miscommunicated. The previous owner was using a foot clutch but i am running hand controls. Stock bars, clutch lever and cable.

I've adjusted the clutch basket to spec and even a little tight several times to try and get some cable tension, nothing seems to work so far.

I've adjusted clutch basket with the cable adjuster all the way in, then backed it out slowly to find tension. Not even the slightest bit.

Adjust the clutch - per procedure - cable completely loose, screw in until you feel tension - back off 1/4 to 1/2 turn - lock the screw down. Obviously the transmission side cover has to be on. Then adjust the cable until you have 1/8" free play.

Was the clutch working before, if so that shouldn't be a problem after it is adjusted properly? If you are moving it back to the hand do you have the correct/stock lever perch bracket? Cable lengths are for shorter or taller bars, the amount of adjustment range should be consistent.

Just to clarify, you are installing a new cable (with new cable sleeve), correct?
