Default Electrical Problem

07 Dyna FXDB StreetBob
Experiencing intermittent flickering of speedometer backlight while in operation. This is almost always followed by an engine shutdown. When attempting to restart the engine, application of the engine start button results in a "snap" noise followed by complete electrical failure.
  • No recent work has been performed prior to this problem.
  • Battery tests good with a full charge
  • Alternator tests good
  • Fuses test good
  • battery connectors clean and tight
The system returns to normal everytime I remove and reseat the battery. I did notice a small cut in the positive wire behind the battery box. Could this be the problem?

It does sound like you have some current flowing through the frame at times. I would definitely fix the nick in the positive cable. You haven't by chance lowered the rear end of the bike recently, have you?

No modifications at all. I just ran a Speedometer Self Diagnostics and got a DCT of "B1007 Ignition Line Overvoltage Instruments " , I cant seem to find any information on what this mean exactly though. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I am assuming this indicates I have a short in the speedometer backlight wire since it is the only part of the speedometer faulting and the ignition start causes the overvoltage shutdown of the entire electrical system.

I removed my tank console and adjusted the wiring harness underneath. Cleared the Speedometer Self Diag event and re-ran a test. Everything turned out OK this time around.
