Hello everyone.
I just moved here from the Sportster forum. I traded my 04 Sporty for an 03 Wide Glide with 7,400. Cost me my bike (4,500 miles) plus $3K.
I thought that it was a good deal as the WG has tons of chrome and looks absolutly new!!
I drove it home and notice a small drip coming from the lower primary.
The bike drove perfect and no noises from the trans. Shifted great.
I took it to the dealer to have this leak checked. When they took the cover off they found a lot of metal in the oil. It looked pretty serious so they removed the trans. A couple of bearings were chewed up and and this was wearing down the shaft.
Given the prestine condition of this bike and how the previous owner babied it I cannot understand why it has this damage. Anyone know of another case like this one. Could it be due to a defect from the factory with the trans assembly or a defective bearings.
I could either have them rebuilt this trans which would be around $1,500 or for another $1,000 I could go with the screamin eagle 6 speed.
I think that the 6 speed would be the best way to go. Opinions???
Thanks in advance.
Danny

I do not have a Dyna, but I would do a little research comparing Baker DD6 and the SE 6 Speed. I bet the Baker unit is better and about the same cost. You could also pick up a complete 5 speed gear set on eBay for less than 250.00 dollars.
Since this is an anniversary model, for resale value would it be better to keep this bike stock with the 5 speed trans?
I have read that the case needs to be grinded in order to fit in the SE 6 speed and once this is done you cannot put back the 5 speed trans.
Thanks for the ebay tip. I found a 5 speed brand new in a case (that is not needed.) http://tinyurl.com/lzxjwy
Asking $595 obo plus $50 for shipping. Maybe he will take $500 or less.
This is a lot cheaper than the dealer who wanted $850 in parts to rebuild the 5 speed and this was only for a few new parts and not an entirely brand new trans.

Boy, there's your answer. As much as I like my 6-shooter, keeping yours stock is prob'ly the best idea, especially at that price. Welcome to the Dyna Forum.

The anniversary models don't have any better resale value because they were just as mass produced as the other years. Only way they would have a better resale value is if they were in limited production. Do to it what you want...
Thanks for all of your input. I called the dealer this morning and it was too late to change to the 5 speed. They had purchased the 6 speed trans from another dealer and it had just arrived. Too bad because the trans on ebay was a great buy.
I will let you all know how the new SE 6 speed trans is once I get the bike back.
