Default '06 Dyna - First SERT use and map creation

I finally had a shot to mess with my SERT a little bit today. I put a TourMaster bag on the bike, hooked up the laptop, started the SERT's data mode and went for a ride. Rode about 20 minutes. When I got home, I realized that I hadn't been recording in "Engine with O2 Data" mode, so I fixed that and went for a second ride. I did steady throttle cruising and throttle roll-ons from several different speeds. Did a couple drag race style starts just for fun too.

I had planned to really study the data prior to making any map changes, but it clouded up and looked like rain. I did a quick playback and looked for any spark knock retard. I was very surprised to find none. The wind was picking up, so I decided to do a minor map modification and see how it worked.

On the '06 Dynas, you can just alter the mv settings for the O2 sensors in order to richen up your mixture. I open up the basic Stage I map (141NX001-A0.MT6) and went into the "Closed Loop Bias Table". I bumped up all the tables in the 70 and 80 kPa columns to 622. All other tables in the 1500 rpm - 3500 rpm ranges were bumped up two increments to a setting of 506. Saved the map with a new name and hooked the laptop back up to the bike.

I'd never uploaded a map before, so my fingers were crossed. Everything went smooth. I fired up the bike and headed out. I only got to ride it about 10 miles, but man what a difference. The bike pulled like it's never pulled before. This is how it's supposed to be!!! It's still not perfect and I think even more fuel might help, but I'm going to take it slow and do one change at a time. Got to wait on nice weather now, but I'm real happy with the SERT. This thing makes tuning a snap.

If you've been considering a SERT, then go for it. It's not difficult to use at all. There is an intimidation factor because of fear of the unknown, but once you get used to using it, you'll really like it.

I'm running the SEII slip-ons, with a SE/AC and a K&N filter. My bike had the Stage I download done at the dealer. It ran lean. The map I started with is the '06 Dyna Stage I map... same as the dealer download... here is adescription from the Calibration ID file on the SERT CD-Rom -

Calibration # 32: 2006 Shotgun / Shorty Dual Exhaust with O2 Sensors
Configuration: 1450 SE A/C & Mufflers
File Name: 141NX001-A0.MT6
Components:
• SE Air Cleaner and Breather Kit P/N 29440-99C
• SE II Slip-Fit Mufflers P/N 80448-03 or 80258-99A

Ok.. here is what I started with. In advanced mode of the tuning screen, this is the "Closed Loop Bias" table. The numbers in the tables represent the mv for the O2 sensors.

Here is the same screen after I changed the settings. You can see that I increased a bunch of cells by two increments. Increasing these numbers causes the ECM to richen up the mixture for the RPM range on each row. It uses the data sent from the sensors to determine the amount of fuel to add to the mix.

Like I said, I could only ride a few miles, but it felt like a different bike. Listening to the exhaust note, it sounded a lot smoother too. Power was way up and running through the gears, the front end even got light. I still think there is room for improvement though. If it ever gets warm again, I'll work on it some more. Once I get it dialed in, if anyone wants a copy of the map, just ask. But fair warning here - I am no expert and this is my first time to use a SERT.

I'm using the Screaming Eagle Race Tuner (SERT). HD sells them. It comes with a 130 page instruction manual, a CD-ROM with tuning software and the equipment to hook a computer to your bike. It allows you to manipulate the settings in the bike's computer and tune it however you want. Do a search on this forum for SERT. There are several great threads explaining how they work.

I used to think you were pretty cool, now I hate you.

Just kidding bro, just jealous. I want a sert, but will have to wait until after deployment to afford it. One big question......did it eliminate your surging in 2nd gear at about 25 MPH?

No surging. But, I didn't get to ride it far. Temperatures were dropping fast and it looked like it was going to pour. The wind was blowing stuff everywhere. The only things I noticed that I wanted to change were; When I got on it hard and then let off the throttle (lots of severe engine compression braking), it popped once or twice. I'm going to mess with the decel settings to try to fix that. Lots more power, and of course since more is better, so I'm going to go even richer and see what happens.. [8D]

Dude, yer gettin a SERT!
