I see what you are getting me to see. Must be a large coil spring pushing the Sliding Cam outward to keep tension againest the Compensating Sprocket. I can see if this was too weak it would let the Sliding Cam bang in and out of the Cover Assembly to the Compensating Sprocket.

How many here have had your noise issues looked at by dealer and found it not documented when compared to C/S readouts? Or even written on your slip?Watch out for this new trick!

even 4 stroke dirt bikes.........

Its not your timing cover turning blue, its the pipe in front of its reflection, all harleys do it, all bare motorcycle pipes turn colors due to heat.

You might be talking about me. I picked my bike back up from the dealer after an 18 day stay. They had pulled the primary and removed the compensator nut, relocktied and torqued the nut. That got rid of the rocks in a can noise. Now I can hear my lifter rattle and my 5th gear whine and watch my timing cover turn blue to match my pipes. Am I a happy camper?--- I don't think so, it's going back to the dealer tommorrow. Wish me GOOD LUCK

1st time I brought my bike in for the noise 2 of the techs told me they heard something that didn’t sound right. They told me to make an appointment and that they would contact the moco and open the bike up to see where the noise was coming from. They told me not to worry that Harley would take care of it. I made the appointment, brought the bike in, they didn't start work on it for almost a week and a half. When I went to pick up the bike they told me they couldn't hear any noise so there was no reason to call the moco.

Pitguy, I believe these are the type of tricks you are talking about.

Also note, that one of the techs told me that there are other problems with these bikes. One is a knocking sound in the front suspension, new design I was told and my bike has it. Another is a wire to the rear cylinder that gets snapped causing the rear cylinder not to fire. I also had that issue. It was hard for the techs to find the problem because the wire snapped within the wire cover. Supposedly the design of the wire is to short and gets nicked with all the engine movement. The techs extended the wire in order to correct the problem. So keep an eye out for this if you find your engine is running really rough, it might be firing on one cylinder.

I know there are some people who don't mind paying big bucks and getting a product in return that was put out in a rush just to turn a profit. The moco company just assumes that Harley owners are so loyal that they will swollow their crap and say thank you. But I don't roll like that. It's my hard earn cash, I've never let anyone take advantage of me and never will. I will keep bringing my bike back until it's fixed and keep warning people about the issues. BTW, 2 of the techs told me on the side that they were holding off on purchasing a new bike until all of these issues are corrected by the moco.

pitt, if you look on page 6-22 of the shop manual. Figure 6-30 in the bottom left corner of the picture. At the #9750 you can see some of the spring inside Rotor/Spring Cover. The wire diameter looks to be small on the spring. With a diameter that small it could not be a very strong spring. On page 8-17, figure 8-20 there is a picture of the Rotor/Spring Cover. On the inside of the Rotor/Spring Cover you can see a piece holding the spring in and it is crimped looks like 3 places to keep the spring retainer in. So it be difficult to take it apart. That is why the parts catalog doesn't show a spring, it is permanent in the Rotor/Spring Cover. Look at it and see what you think. I know we are still hunting for the fix, but I really believe this it it.

I also think this is part of the noise problems we are hearing, some of us may have other things too.The first thing is torque should be checked if nothing apparent is out of the ordinary and bike retested, this has cured some bikes.Mine was quiet at first but as more time was put on bike the louder the noise got when hot and at times. This shouldve been the first things the dealers, factory went after. But in so doing they would be acknowledging the problem.
