pitt are you saying they told you the spring was in the compensator itself? I am looking at the parts catalog and it is not showing a spring in the compensator. Did you mean the spring in the primary chain adjuster? Unless the spring is built into on of the compensator parts and not showing it seperately.

Ok guys/gals.several updates today some not that great. My dealer took my bike home last night and didnt hear the noise.BUT he didnt ride it long enough either and with temps in the 40s last night this may have been why.Tonight he said he will ride it longer w/more hwy use.C/S never returned my call yesterday but called my dealer this AM.I now have a higher up at the factory Im dealing with.Although we argued and voices were raised at times we made progress.Seems some people are complaining about noise and lugging engine and this will cause drive train noise-I agreed. But some have real issues.Build date has nothing to do with it I was told. The noise is coming from compensating sprocket spring.Yes this woman told me this..A rep is suppose to look at my bike w/in a week and was told after she spoke w/all involved that I could possible have my bike back. Its staying if I have any say. Also today I got replys back from various magazines I emailed. The one even emailed MOCO with questions for me and he also agreed w/me on noise.I wont expose this person unless authorized. But replied thanking for their efforts.Sounds like the MOCO is honestly working on this and yes they do watch sites like this and I should watch what I say.Should know alittle more maybe tomorrow and will keep you updated.

My American Motorcycle Assoc. magazine just arrived. In the October issue is an article about the 07 Harley's. You can read it at http://www.amadirectlink.com/news/2006/FXSTC/ Funny how Harley gave them a Softtail to test drive and the article says the gears are all helical-cut gears. Hmm, a little misleading marketing going on. Anyway I sent them (AMA) an email correcting them on the gears and telling them about the related whine and the extreme clattering on many of the touring models. Their email address is letters@ama-cycle.org. Send them an email and let them know just how wide spread this problem is and that the MoCo is dicking us around (ok, reword that last part).

As for the calling in to the MoCo and bitching, how about the next week or the week after. Let's pick one and give the MoCo a week long headache.

My dealer was told the comp sprocket wasnt the noise at cruise. He was lead to believe it was at start up.Harley told me different.Like I said this is on going. My bike wouldnt make the noise in the last couple days while in for this problem.Bike had oil cooler installed while in and the last few days have been in the 40s to 70s during their testing times. My dealer is still working on this but am waiting on factory rep which may take at least a week longer.Until then I plan on riding this thing to further test it.If I can get it to do it again on a steady basis I will get it on tape this time.Other wise this bike runs very well compared to what others have having. No popping, glowing pipes and so on.

The compensator spring is built into the nut or gear on the end of the crankshaft. It's a new design for this year. They probably redesigned it to prevent them from coming loose and destroying the altenator rotor.

For what it is worth I mailed a letter to HD customer service today requesting fix of the problem (clatter) or asking for a refund.

Forwarded a copy of the letter to letters@ama-cycle.org.

Mine was put back in the shop today, primary noise, overheating and fifth gear noise.parade down load for overheating, comp nut for primary bang,85w 140oil for trans noise. They called and said come get it,everything is fixed.I asked them to ride it one more time next week before I pick it up,they agreed. The dealership is making an honest attempt.I guess I'll find out next week ,but the only thing I'm optimistic about is the overheating issue.I sent a letter to AMA also.I'll wait and see about the repairs before I send one to hd.

My bike has had issues 13 dys after purchase.Really less then that but this was my first documented complaint. The weather temps are cooler here now but doesnt appear to keep this thing from making noise.Engine,tranny,primary.Now it dies with no warning.Ive had it!
