Thank you sir.

Sounds like that makes sense. on to the rest of the issues. Law suits are in the works. When it's all said and done I hope the parties at fault feel as though they got

When I was wrenching for an indy, the only thing that made a bike a definate total was a bent frame. If
Actually if the bike has enough value to it that won't even total out a bike. I work at the collision/PDI centerfor a local dealership. We have done 4 frame replacements in the last few weeks (2 Vrods, a Street Glide and a Trike) and are waiting on the parts to do another (Road King).

Bike gets totaled, you get check from insurance, you buy totaled bike from insurance company you rebuild bike. bad idea
This can actually work out fairly well. It all depends on what kind of damage the bike has. The FXD in my signature was totaled (kind of)by an insurance company. Bascially they totaled it because the fork stop on the lower tree hit scuffed the steering head. Replacing the frame would have exceeded the value of the bike. It was just cosmetic damage that if I bother to fix, I'll probably use a sharpie. Bought it from the insurance company and changed out the whole front end except for the fork lowers, put on a new gas tank and h-bars/cables/etc, got it painted and gave it a 20k service. I have put about 350 miles on it in the last couple weeks since I finished it and it runs and rides perfectly. I got lucky though, when I got the title in the mail...it was completely clean. Guess the insurance company forgot to file the paperwork with the DMV. Would have been happy if it had come with the slavage title I was expecting, thrilled that it didn't.

My 08 UC's frame was bent and surferred minor cosmetic damages. The total came to $11,500. Guess I was lucky, the bike was not totaled. A new frame is being installed and I shall not receive a salvaged bike title when its all said and done. The sad part of it all..the bike will not be out of the hospital until December,

I'll not be able to ride until at least January. Oh well, I guess I can use the winter to improve in all aspects.

Do you end up with a different VIN number if you change frames or is this one of those deals where the shop cuts your old VIN number from your existing frame, sends it into H-D and Harley reissues the VIN on the replacement frame?

interesting thread, that i can totally relate to,,, ( i know,,, that was bad )

i've got an '06 FatBoy at the dealers being repaired, as a young lady wasn't paying attention at a stoplight, & she nailed me before i made it thru the intersection. ( do not past GO,, do not collect $200.,, but take an ambulance ride directly to hospital for Xrays & CAT scan )
i have Progressive Ins. ( thank god )
the damage to the bike ( in my eyes ) was minimal, need to replace floorboards, one floorboard mount, sidestand, mount, one of the uppers on the frontend, a mirror, my aftermarket pipes, & my aftermarket engineguard.
( the policy covers up to $3000. as a minimum, & the amount can be raised thru your local ins. agent. )
now the bad part,, the upper mount of the engineguard twisted the tab that it was bolted to, inturn, stretching the tab between the two front tubes of the frame & cracking the welds of the tab...
the adjuster & dealer says it needs a new frame & will take 12 shop hours ( @ $95. per ) to swap everything over to the new frame
( incidentally, the serv.mgr. has had to replace a few frames in the past for the exact same reason, he said it doesn't take much to stress that tab & pop the welds,, & here most guys put on an engineguard to protect the bike in a simple tip-over at home & ironically, that engineguard does protect your bars, tank, carb from damage, but totally tweaks your frame )
oh well, as i said, the bike is being repaired & bumping it up to 95" while it's down

In FL damage over about 70% leads to "rebuildable" title, over about 90% to "certificate of distraction" (means for parts only).
