I usually have someone buy me dinner before they F**k me.
I now just buy the manuals and do it my self, also this lead into doing more and more work on my bike. You really cant beat the Harley manuals for depth and clarity.
They quoted me $380.00 for the first service. I asked them to throw it in and I'd buy the bike which they did. I'll be doing all the other services myself.
1000 mile service for $235 (or $270 with synthetic) at the local stealer. Good or bad price? I live in the Kansas City area. What does it cost to do it myself? I am a pretty good with a wrench, but don't have a lift. Can it be done without one? Does it void my warranty? Any advice or insight is appreciated.
That's a good price for the Stealer to do it. It's about 40-50 bucks less here of late with the economy in the crapper like it is. You can do it yourself if you have the ability. I will take mine in each time it is due while I have my warranty.
My dealer has first 2 services free no matter which model. You just pay for oil and gaskets. They go over the whole bike. adjust cables, clutch, belt, headlight etc. whole process took about 2 1/2 hrs with 2 test rides before I got it back. I just had my 5K service on my 09 Fat Bob...$73 including shop fee and sales tax. They even washed and dried it : ) I will have to find out what the next service will cost. If it is around $2-300 then It would average out to $4-450 for all three services during warranty period. Small price to pay to help ensure things go smoothly if you do have problem during first 2 yrs
Got mine for just a few bucks over $100 with a chrome oil filter at local shop, and I was there to watch him do it, no corners cut either. great value.

I agree, the first service is much more than an oil change. I just did it on my wife's 09 FXDL. The clutch needs to be adjusted, the rear belt tension checked, the steering stem bearings adjusted, ....
I have never paid for one, i do it myself. When something comes up that i don't know how to do, i either learn or pay for that service. I have 23 months on my fat bob and 46,000 miles, i cant justify paying all those service fees, besides. If you can change oil and take care of your car you can do the same on a bike.
My service dpt at north texas hd has always treated me well and taken care of any warranty issues without giving me any grief about my pciii or aftermarket pipes and a/c, or the non hd fluids and they always give me a full wash after any service.
I don't neglect having any service done just because i cant do it, it gets done and paid for either at hd or the indy i trust.
Routine things like all fluids, brakes, plugs and the like are just wasting money to have them done by anyone, its not rocket science as far as general maint.
You really need to look at the business side. Sure, you can do it for a lot less....

Support your local dealer or indie shop with business. They may not be there tomorrow and that is not good for anyone.
P.S. Those who say they are getting something for "free" in their bike deals ... You're paying. One way or the other, you are paying. I would lay odds that no right-thinking wrench donated 2 hrs of his personal time and materials to work on your bike. This is one reason you pay more at the dealer or shop, it's all rolled in the fees. But, you got a good bike and a way to manage your cash flow ... no?
Soooo, I'm a new rider and I'm new to this forum thingy. I just bought a 2010 Street Bob on Sept. 11th. Anyways, I'm not much of a gearhead myself but when MY dealer told me the 1,000 mi service was 360 bones, my pride would not let me pay such an outrageous price. I got a service manual and said F*** them. I got all my fluids, an O-ring and gasket set, and an oil filter and I did it myself. The manual was a gift and I spent about 50 bucks on the parts. It took about 2 hours and did not require a lift. Also, it was a good feeling after I was done. My hands were grimey and my knuckles were busted but I had an extra 310 bucks in my pocket. My only regret was not having an oil filter wrench.
On my first service, my dealer overfilled my oil by about 3/4 of a quart. Charged me $325. Had to replace an oil saturated air filter which made the bike start hard. They'll never touch my bike again. Buy a manual and do it yourself. Period!
