Default 99 Road King Won't start and stay at idle

A couple of months ago my 99 Road King started to die when I was at idle. I didnt like being without my bike so I just started to give it a little gas when i was at idle so it wouldnt die on me. Now it starts 50% of the time and when it does, take off at 1st gear is very sluggish. Or after riding a while and i stop and shut off the bike the bike wont start for a long time. The dealer had it for over 1 month and told me they "believe" it needs a new top end, rings, etc. because it had low compression. Can somebody help me out and throw me a bone here...

very limited information provided.
there are many informed individuals on this forum that are will to help.
in order to better provide suggestions please provide:
miles
any changes to motor?
fuel injected?
any changes to pipes , air cleaner?
any repair history?
how old is battery?
have you checked battery with a cheap digital multimeter? off, while starting, running?
what do the spark plugs look like? black, white, tan
How old is gas in tank?
Are there any oil or gas leaks?
It is difficult to provide good suggestions at a distance with-out a little more information.

does it burn oil?, spark plugs would be black?
how do the spark plug wires look?
***just a shot in the dark...have a friend that bought a very very cheap high mileage bike that ran like garbage..no power at all..very very sluggish...basically the bike had worn rings...spark plugs were coated in oil...he just rides with extra spark plugs and changes them as soon as they get coated with oil or bike starts acting up.(adds oil also)..he is not going to put any money into it, he is just going to ride it into the ground.

Sounds like your throttle body needs to be looked at. The M&M throttle body is known for being a little finicky. It's a decent enough system for stock of mildly modded engines, but it does require some maintenance. Check your service manual. I believe it talks about cleaning and adjusting the air bleed system and the Idle Air Control system.

I would suggest looking to see if any codes are being set first.
I would order the service manual and electrical diagnosis manual for the bike.
loose corroded cables at battery, starter, ground.
Charging system putting out correct volts and amps. because at 36k you are about time for a new stator, if you do any long hard riding in hot weather. Old stators had a prblem from factory. Yours should be 45 amp, not 32/38, because of fuel injection.
How low is the compression? it would have to be pretty bad and you would have other signs, smoke, fouled plugs, coughing, missing.
You bike is old with low miles, I would replace the fuel filter in the tank.
Check the pressure regulator, check the fuel pressure at idle.
Find some other shop to do a compression test and a leakdown test. I would also do a digital ohm meter test on the throttle position sensor.
It could have a bad spot in it.
The system is not hard to diagnose if you have the books and understand how it works.

Well Im glad you guys gave me some input. The dealer did run codes and nothing came up. Lots of good starting points. Going to check all your ideas: fuel filter, elect. connections, stator, throttle body, etc.

Definitely one of the best suggestions- buy a service/elect manual!!!
Do any of you know where would be the best place to look online to buy a cd-rom manual???

Clean the throttle body with some brake or carb cleaner. Protect the motor finish from from over spray. Put the straw into the two holes at the top of each runner and clean them very good. Those holes are your idle air bleed holes and can get gummed up.
