noise in primary
on my 09 Ultra.
I first noticed this while on an extended ride. On a hot day (low 90s) After cruising at about 70mph for over an hour, I pulled to a stoplight, with the clutch pulled in the whirling sound was really loud. It sounded somewhat like the 5th gear noise, only much louder. I found the noise is not present or hardley noticeable while the weather is cool, or before the bike completely warms up. I also found that the noise quiets down as I let the clutch back out and begin moving again. I also found that the noise is much louder if im pulling up to a stop and pull the clutch in while in a higher gear (3rd,4th) to coast up to a stop, and much quieter if i pull in the clutch down shifting all the way to 1st coming to a stop.
Does anyone else experience this same problem?
I feel this is one of those events that if i take it to the dealer they will say they do not hear anything unusual or that it is normal for this bike.

He told me there was a problem with 07 and early 08's with faulty races in the inner primary and without a doubt that was going to be my problem. I have 36,000 miles on it now, but it is still under warranty till February. He is going to repair it with the new race and bearing next Wednesday. It is supposed to be a 2 - 3 hour job depending on how difficult the race is to remove.
I know this is a somewhat old thread, but I thought I would post a reply for anyone else looking for this problem. I will do a follow up post after the work is done.

Mine failed twice, and in researching/investigating the issue, I kinda became the 'go-to' guy on the Dyna Forum for IPB issues. Though out of warranty, most of us '06-D owners are getting our IPB fix done for free. First failure, most just get a new bearing/race. When/if that fails, we usually get the "Full Monty" fix; new bearing/race, new '07+ IP and Tranny Cases, and in a few instances all new tranny bearings & shafts. Our '06-D IP and Tranny cases did not come with alignment dowels between them. If you were lucky, the factory got everything perfectly aligned at assembly, and you may never have a problem. My first IPB failed at 3900-miles. The "fix" failed at 12K. I have the Full Monty now, and so far, so good (18K).
I'm new to the Touring world, but I doubt your problems are caused by a lack of case alignment dowels, but I'm very familiar with the whirring noise and diagnosing whether it is a bad IPB or something else. For a simple "how to", read my thread starter here...

Lotsa more info on the cases, dowels, and HD's pink letter later in the thread.
