For those of you who elected to supply your own oil - did HD deduct this off their 1K service price? IMO, I'm not too fond of using HD petro products (not their specialty) & would rather select/supply mine.
When I bought my 09 Harley Ultra Classic with 4 miles on it, I also worked the extended 5 year warranty in the deal. I followed the break-in instructions as specified. I took my bike in for the 1000k service, in which they charged me $289.00 (brought my own oil in). I got the bike back in about 2 hours, so I was good with that.
NOW THE PROBLEM - When I got home, My friend came over, who has been riding and working on Harley's for 40 YEARS! He went over the bike and brought to my attention that they DID NOT adjust the clutch (cable), drive belt loose, one of the engine mount bolts was loose, did not grease the stearing head, left a huge dent/scratch in the chrome oil filter, and when they washed the bike, left swirl scratch markes on most of my chrome, paint, and windshield! WHAT THE F###!
Went back to the dealer and pointed out all of the above. They told me that I should have inspected it before I left the dealer! WHAT A JOKE!
Will never trust a dealer again...Doing all of my own maintenance. Thank GOD I have friends that are experienced Harley owners. They are a lot more trust worthty then HD dealers, that only care about $$
OH! did I mention that the dealer told me that if I didn't have them or an authorized HD service center do the work on my bike, my warranty would be voided!
I took my wife's bike in for the 1k service as the dealer picked it up and returned it while it snowed. They quoted the price plus tax. But when I got the bill they added shop fee's, disposal fees, and did the crappiest wash job. Wish they just left the smudges and fingerprints on it.But they didn't charge for pick up or return. Now they charge you for the paper towl's the tech's wipe their hands on? And for putting the used oil in the drum?
I have around 800 miles on my 2010 flhx and I was thinking about doing my 1000 mile maintenance myself. I was looking into getting the fix my hog dvd's. Do any of yall have these, and if so is the 1000 mile service on them?
At 1034 miles on the clock I purchased 7 qts Amsoil, filter and primary gasket for $85 from an independent. Already had the owner's manual ($60) as I bought it when I got the bike. I put a better fluid in my bike than the dealer would of and I know for a fact it was done right. Saved over $200 and have peace of mind. Save the receipts and document what you did and when you did it for waranty purposes. Go overboard and take a photo of your work. Modern digital cameras put a date/time stamp on the picture file if there's ever a question.
