07 roadster - se pipes and se stage 1 breather + stage1 dealer download...I run 3/4 ounce of NOS octane booster + 91 oct. premium in every tank - when straight highway riding I've gotten 137 miles when light came on - around town average 100 to 104 sometimes less when riding hard - before the NOS was around 115-120 highway and 94 - 100 city when light came on. Figure you should get 30 - 40 miles after light....

WVHogRider: i tend to not fill it all the way to the top afraid i may spill, but i know what you mean, i also called the dealer and im taking it in to get the gas gauge or meter thing checked. My light came on and i have ran exactly 50 miles with it, i looked in the tank and noticed it was half way. I think my gas light is the issue, is coming on with 1.65 gallons left. Thanks for your replies.

I'm having a similar issue, only I think my fuel gauge is actually working correctly. Stock my bike got about 30 mpg's on the freeway. I've added an S/E air cleaner, V&H shortshots a PCV and Autotune. The last three trips were the same distance and all freeway miles. The light comes on at 70-72 miles and I fill the bike to the top at 75 miles and it takes 2.8 gallons. That's just under 27 mpg's on the freeway! It's worse than my bmw! I'm sure if I take the bike into the dealer they are just going to say it's the aftermarket stuff, but it has been this way since day 1. I only have about 800 miles on it, but I highly doubt that mileage is going to improve much after it's fully broken in.

Well, to get the full amount into the fuel tank, you need to fill it up to the bottom of the fuel bung. Also, as I stated, the fuel light/gauges are notorious for being inaccurate, and is why everyone uses their tripodometer to tell when they need to fill up. Just my $0.02 though.

makes sense. I did fill it up this time the correct way till the bung and to my surprise it took about 8 bucks.. i did run with the gas light on more than i used to so it was a lot more empty than before. I'll see if i could get atleast 100 miles before i chicken out and fill up.

07 nightster
~8600 miles
SE air intake (standard), V&H short shots,
ECM download "D" (latest from HD), power commander V with map from FuelMoto

i didnt want to post in this thread until after i got my engine issue signed off on, but i can safely post now. average 39 to 40mpg. all city riding, half stop n go in 40mph, half on 60mph road. my fuel light also comes on hella early, between 75 and 80 miles on the tripometer.

seems like our average city fuel economy is about 40mpg and highway is 50ish? for a 1200cc engine on a moderately light bike, sounds about right i guess.

so we could certainly push another 30-40 miles when the light comes on. Which would go into the 100-120 range miles per tank.

Mileage depends on a number of factors; components on the bike, it's state of tune, riding conditions, and your riding 'style'.

I live in a very rural area, no stop and go city traffic, and I'm also a pretty conservative riding when out on the mean highways.

My 2005 1200C gets right at 50 MPG, and that's running performance Screamin' Eagle "E" cams which flow more air/fuel mixture than the stock 1200 camshafts.

For comparison purposes, my 2003 EFI Softail FatBoy averages right at 48 MPG under the same conditions. It's running a high flo intake/exhaust, has a Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner, and has been dyno tuned.

My 2003 Dyna WideGlide doesn't get quite as good of mileage, but it is setup for performance and not fuel economy. It has the 1550 (95") upgrade, 10;25:1 high compression pistons, Screamin' Eagle 204 cams, a dialed in Mikuni HSR 42 carb, and it has also been dyno tuned. It averages around 44 MPG under the same conditions as the other bikes.

My 2001 EFI RoadKing also gets around 44 MPG. It has the Stage 1 and is running V&H duals.

Of course the mileage of any of these bikes would vary greatly if I lived in a metropolitan area and had to do the stop and go city traffic thing, or if I pretended that any of my Harleys were 'race bikes' and did a lot of full throttle runs..

Well i did what was advised and managed to get 100 miles to the tank. Not the most fuel efficient experience but definitely a huge improvement. I filled up to the top and ran like 70 miles till the light came on then another 31 till i actually felt the bike stutter when i rolled the throttle hard(little fuel left). Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
