I laughed when the dealer told me $250 for service.
So I bought 5 qts amsoil and a chrome filter for $65 and changed everything in 30 minutes without a manual....never seen the bottom of a harley before.
yeah....it's that easy.
spend your money on the manual and oil/filter... thats less than $135 and then buy something cool for the other $100... like a personalized license plate that says "***-DLR"
or maybe a flag that says "chillin the most".. then rock that bitch up and down the coast
...and be a cowboy baby

I understand the other postings about how the dealer has to pay their service techs and insurance and pay for the building.. but come on almost $300 for a fluid change and a quick once-over ? Plus as a bonus, I get to clean off left over oil, bugs and anti-sieze.

I don't think that the issue is that we all don't want to pay for our first 1K service. The issue is the dollar amount being charged to some owners for what they are getting. It's a fluid change.. which should really only cost around $100. I can see paying that.... but having to pay the other $200 to basically check out the bike to see how it's been doing for a whole 1K miles.. it should be free and part of the HD warranty. Hmm.. adjust my clutch.. check over my cables.. Heck.. I like to ride top end TREK bicycles that cost over $4K and the first service to check over all the gears and cables.. is FREE at my local TREK dealer. I think what we're saying is that ya know.. if Harley has a 24 month warranty.. why should the owner have to pay for their factory technicians to make sure it's all working the way it's supposed to ? We're paying HD to find things wrong which are covered under their warranty.. seems like a 20/20 situation.

Many dealers have a tech spend about 2 hours going over the bike, dozens of things to check and rarely anything found. Then there is about 30 minutes of cleaning and another 30 for road test. Some techs are better than others and some dealers allow less than 2 hours. Then there is about $50 in parts ($6 for a quart for that genuine HD oil) and another $20 in shop fees. So if your dealer has a $80 per hour labor charge, then it gets over $300 quickly. The simple oil changes and once overs at this dealer are less than $100.
I prefer to get "expert" opinion on the first service and do my own thereafter. If free service is offered as part of the deal, I'm sure the sales department pays the service department the going rate when you have your bike serviced. The sales department paid for my $500 gift card.
By the way, BMW gives you free service as long as the warrantee is in effect. Its about marketing and business cases... how to separate the most money from the masses while making them feel happy to pay it.....

I was kind of taken aback that the HD dealer put a chrome filter on my bike. The original one was black and I never figured they'd put a chrome one on my bike that I've been trying to make into a black and pewter look. Is that the only one there is to put back on is a chrome covered filter ?

I bought my Harley outright from new so no payments for me. However I just put the bike in for it's 5000 mile Service and they updated the softwear and now it's not as good. I wish they had left well alone. I don't realy know what to do now. I can't very well ask the dealer to unservice my bike.

That is what I paid on my Ultra at Blue Springs HD. Central was about the same but had a longer wait to get in.
I have had my Sporty for 8 years. I had the dealer do the first service and I bought the service manual and I have done all fluid changes since. I am doing the same on my Ultra Glide. I had the dealer do the first one, but I'll be doing the rest.
I think many people on here will tell you they paid much more than that for their first service.

I think I will have them do the 1000 mile service. I may check some other dealers in KC. I bought the bike new at Topeka HD and don't want to drive it back due to the distance. However, they were really cool there and gave me a smokin deal on the bike. Anyway, Central's $270 price is steep, but the piece of mind is worth it to me. From then on I will do the work myself.
