I have been running the KP filter for the last 20,000 miles. Switched over from the HD filter after 1000 miles on the new motor. Very pleased with how well it filters the oil and how easy it is to clean. Noticed that my oil stays cleaner longer and it is great to be able to inspect the filter for problems. Paid $100 on ebay so it will take 2 years of HD filters to pay for it. Well worth it to me.

I contacted K&P Engineering and promptly recieved this reply. I have been already using one so I know they work and are simple to use but impressive that I would get a reply so quickly. I did ask for permission to post this.

Make sure they know you are talking about the K&P Engineering filter. The ebay filter they mentioned (pegasus) tried to copy our design but failed testing for oem requirements and the quality is very poor. Something to be said for actually engineering a product vs trying to copy someone else. It’s actually good these guys on the forum are skeptical and want to make sure the product is what it appears to be. We’ve had a couple of people contact us complaining they were misled thinking they were getting our filter when they were sent the other one. I think JP even carries the copy filter.

Dave, thanks for the quick response. Do you mind if I quote your response on a harley forum. It is www.hdforums.com you can look in the touring section and see the discussion regarding reusable filters. I am posted under mtclassic. I won't post your response without your premission. thanks jeff.

Subject: RE: filter question.

Paper media is made up of a bunch of fibers of various sizes and thicknesses that are either pressed and or glued together. The paper media needs to be thicker in order for it to be able to filter to the appropriate level.

Our filter media is made of up stainless steel wires woven into a cloth. The type of weave that you pick, along with the thread count that is used in each direction, determines the shape of the openings in the cloth as well as the direction the opening is pointing. The openings in our cloth end up pointing in various directions which maintains the flow but makes it even harder for a piece of debris to get through the cloth. In other words if you are looking straight down at the media, the openings will seem even smaller than they are because they are not 90 degrees to the surface of the media. It is a single layer so that it can be cleaned, but feels thicker because of this weave.

In the end what really matters is how big the particles are that are getting through the media. That’s why we use the ASTM test. Basically it identifies how large the particles are that can get through the media regardless of how thick the media is or what shape the openings are or what direction they are pointed.

After a year of testing the FAA approved our filters for certified aircraft, the technology had been in use for many years before we started using it by the military and aerospace applications, and we have been making them since 1995 with tens of thousands of them used in various applications with not one problem with the filtration. And that isn’t even the filters strong point! It’s really about the flow. If you don’t have enough flow, and the bypass opens (which happens more than people realize with the stock filter) it doesn’t matter how good the filter media is.

Good luck and let me know if you need anything else.

Nice, I dont really care what people want to use. I am impressed by the KP filter. I work in the Aerospace testing field and use various metal filters on all our engines. I have researched it and known of this technology for years. I was just trying to let you guys know about this KP filter and have nothing to gain. Just research it your self. Most guys like to mod their bikes and those that dont still want the best for them. Check it out before posting "Stock filter been working for years on my bike" type stuff. Just trying to help some of you brothers out.

I've got a K&P filter sitting in the garage waiting for the next oil change. I have no reservations about putting it on. I checked it out before I spent the bucks and I'm satisfied. 'Nuff said.

The pendulum has definitey swung towards reuseable after doing some research and the response from KP. My last concern would be voiding my factory warrentee. If something happened would or could they blame the filter.

I do like the idea of being able to wash the filter and see what is being filtered so you would notice any changes in engine wear that otherwise wouldn't be seen!!

For those of you who have the K&P filters. The web site mentions that the "Quad ring can be normally be used for several oil changes." How often do you have to replace this ring, where do you get your replacements and how much $$$ are they?
