I always check ,but only to make sure the bike is running consistently , and recently there has been a drop of 6 to 8 mpg ,mostly highway. I think it's because there is dampness in my pcV connector. I couldn't get it all out last time I pulled it apart. So either the pcV connector or the colder weather + added alcohol to our gasoline is the culprit. I'll know when I get a chance to pull the pcV apart and blow it out with higher pressure air, higher than an air can for computer cleaning that is! Ordinarily 40 to 44 mpg hwy,30 to 35 city.
BTW to the OP your bike is not broken in yet , the mileage will improve, mine did! The harder you get on it the faster the she guzzles!
I have the same bike and the same numbers for the past two tanks. Combined city and highway, I got 40 mpg on both tanks. I've got a windshield and haven't pushed it yet--kept it below 3500 rpm on acceleration. Our fuel in 10% ethanol so I guess that affects it. I am going to do a 70 mph mileage test this weekend for a benchmark. I want to see how I can get out of a tank for traveling purposes.
I frankly don't know why we track this but I have done this for years. I guess I'm a geek at heart. BTW, I get about the same mileage on my 01 bagger TC88. It must be my riding style.
