Default Tillotson carb number 66 sportster

All, I am looking for the Tillotson part number for my 66 sportster. I have an HD1C and a HD2D card that I can rebuild. Are either of these correct for 1966?

The harley parts listing calls for a 27162-66. What is the conversion to the Tillotson number?

thank you

Good luck on finding the conversion number for a Tillotson.
I have never come across such a cross reference myself.

There are much better choices of carbs to hang on a Sportster instead of a Tillotson. But maybe you want to retain the original carb.

All I can tell you is a 1966 had a Model HD carb. I am not sure about the '1C and 2D' business. Probably not a dime's worth of difference between the two.

I may have a few more bits of information regarding the rebuilding and repair of the Model HD carb, if you need it.

Are there still some parts around for these things? I think they were used until 1970 or so.

Agree on finding any conversion numbers. I have been told the '1' designates Sporty and the '2' is big twin. I have both and can't tell the diff. I don't have a clue what the C and D stand for either, I have a HD2C on my 68 FLH (the stock carb btw), and a HD2D and a HD1B laying around. I do know all three have diff size main jets.

I purchased a NOS in the box Tillitson part number 27162-66c which is listed for all Sportsters '66-'69. There is HD1D 14 stamped on the flange, so I guess that throws a monkey wrench in this whole thing.

Hey,
My friend has been tearing the tilly off his 67 fl and working on it for a few weeks now with no success. He got some rebuild parts for it. He also has a second carb. Upon install the bike runs wide open with the throttle butterfly closed. Throttle has no effect on rpms with either carb. I offered to tear them both apart again and look them over for a second set of eyes. I've done carbs before but not these tillotsons. If you have some information or tricks to do I sure would appreciate it. He wants to keep the original carb since the rest of the bike is bone stock. Any help is welcome!

Thanks

when I rebuilt my HD1D or 1C (I cannot remember, but I know the one I did not use is sitting on my toolbox and can check it tomorrow- the only difference i have heard of is the size of the main jets)

anyway, when I put my carb back on it also ran wide open and idled crazy high. I adjusted the idle screw all the way in and then all the way out until it fell out. I also adjusted the mid-range screw to no avail

finally I found it was a simple carb cable adjustment as I had not properly set the internal throttle cable length to the carb choke arm adjustment

try that; hope it helps
mine runs great now
