On a dyno, you may see a small difference between true duals and the stock exhaust. In the real world I believe there are very few that can feel much difference if any at all, though some will claim they can. And forget about those ridiculous claims of 10 to 15 HP increases with 2 into ones. It takes a lot more than an exhaust change to make that kind of power. I always changed to true duals on my bikes and I've never been disappointed. Currently running Bubs7 td's on my 08 SG with BB and some head work. 120 ft. lbs. of torque 100 tq at just 1500 rpms. Guess if I went to the 2 into 1 I'd be making 135 tq. I say but what looks good to you.

To add on to this question, is it necessary to install a stage 1 kit and new ECM when going to tru duels? Or can this be done on an as you can afford it basis?
The Bub 7's are different with their stepped front header pipe. Because of that, they will perform more closely to a 2-1 than any other pipe set-up on the market IMHO.

Originally I put a set of XIEDs on mine and it ran fine, remember you have to put on a set of slipons that are equal left to right, the stock exhaust ( at least on my '08 ) was way more restrictive on the left side.
By the end of the year I was at a place where I could add the SE Air Cleaner and the Race Tuner. What a difference! That and a dyno tune will really wake your motor up.

That is the truth. You need all three. Pipes alone don't do much. The A/C and tuner wake that baby up.
Look at what FuelMoto has to offer for 2010 bikes, and read their product descriptions carefully. Looks like the performance of a 2-1 but using the left muffler for tuning purposes. They also offer a head pipe, minus cat, that uses the stock heat shields. I've been considering their product for my 2010 Ultra.
had rinehart td on my 07 ultra....lost the low end power alittle bit, u can feel the lose ...trust me...now i kept my stock header and only use rinehart slipon...in the future think about 2-1 set up....
