Unless your're a closet queen with no mechanical ability, yes, a service manual is a very good place to start. Talked with folks that say, I've got the owners manual. I just roll my eyes.

I'm surprised people don't own shop manuals for everything they own. I'm constantly amazed by people who can recite oil ring end gaps by memory but have no idea how to fix a dvd player.

When I first started manuals were too expensive,so I learned the hard way.Todays bikes are soo much more complicated,you need one period!! Even if it just for the wiring diagram.
