Default Carb Question

I have a 2004 FLSTF with the stock CV carb. I have had it back to the dealer three times and they have not helped the poor performance/idling problem it has. I am planning to change to either a Mikuni or S&S carb by next season. I was wondering which carb is the best overall chioce. I plan to street /road ride and drag race also. I would appreciate any input from those familiar with either of these makes of carbs.

Mikuni all the way. If you want to by a new petcock you can ditch all those stupid vaccum lines that really helped my bike out.

I gotta tell youu, the CV carb is hard to beat when tuned properly. Sounds like you need to find a good indy to tune the carb you have. Alot of guys go out and buy the bigger carbs, when the CV is one of the best made (bullet proof )carbs out there. Unless you are going with a lot of cubes, I would stay with what you got. If you are either of the two mentioned are good carbs.

Here's a real cheap mod. Remove the plug covering the mixture screw, remove the top of the carb insert 2 #4 brass washers under the needle. putneedle back in top back on. Turn mix screw out 2 1/2 turns from lightly seated. That should bring some life back into the bike, cost your time plus about a couple of dollars. You could also replace the slow jet with a #46 jet, leave the main alone for now. The 346 may be available at a indy or metric bike shop. Raising the needle gets the fuel up out of the main a little quicker/richer. That is how my 02 is set up.
